I do too, but I think at a show, it's more about a bit of "entertainment" factor, not necessarily serious listening. And it's as much about meeting the people making the gear and asking them questions, than whether these systems are optimized to their fullest.
That's why we have never bothered...
Hats off to Gary for playing FGTH. Thats a fun record and when they cranked it up, really showed what the Burmester/Genesis system could muster. The people in the room were smiling and rocking out, and for this writer, that's what it's all about. Not sitting around, tugging your beard and...
Well, once again, we have a crabby person, that knows nothing about me, my business or my industry relationships, suggesting that I am a dishonest person.
I run a magazine. I charge money for advertising, and I pay my writers, photographers and editors to create content. Pretty much like...
We've reviewed a lot of Mac gear over the last six years, and have always had a great relationship with the factory. I've always felt that while not the absolute best stuff in terms of resolution, etc etc, it's really well made gear that sounds pretty darn good, and considering the price of a...
No the beer swinging guy is Johan Coorg of KEF. A great man to hang out with and have a few with. You got yourself banned from AudioAficionado by being rude and insulting to me, Robb Neiman (the Burmester importer) and Ivan. You were a big TONE and Burmester fanboy, emailing me six times a...
Not really, and I don't care to either. Love both amps, different tonal characters to be sure. Pass amps sound a little more tubey than the Burmester.
And as far as the HVAC thing goes, it just seems kind of silly to run AC all day long and run a pair of amps drawing 2000 watts all day long...
Going to Tokyo tomorrow morning, and will be visiting their factory this week. The review will be in issue 54.
Sorry it's taken so long, but we felt that the factory visit was a critical element for a component costing this much.
A single 911 is my reference in room two, while the XA200.5s are the reference in room 1. The Pass amps are a bit more tubey sounding, a little more inner detail and the 911 monos have slightly more slam and a little bit more super low bass power.
Both are pretty amazing actually, I could live...
TONEAudio has a full review of Meridian Audio's new Explorer DAC and headphone amplifier. Plays 24/192 files, and is built in Cambridge at the Meridian factory. Product was announced a few hours ago, but we managed to snag an advance sample. $299 at your Meridian dealer...
Got a 400 in here a while back to do a vintage article. Not a bad amp at all. Kind of grainy overall. Don't think I'd say it gave any of the modern amps any threat, and in comparison to the ARC D-79 that I had back in the 80's and again in the 90's not even close. (grabbed a friends' D-79 in...
Stereo recordings were invented for a number of reasons, but one of the main ones was to sell more speakers...
Good mono recordings are really a treat with a good setup.
I told Fleming Rassmussen I would put in a dedicated 220v line to review one of his amps. I've only heard them in Europe, but they are fantastic. Sounds like a great excuse to go to the Munich Hifi show next year. He's a very nice guy too.
96 db, "not that efficient?" That would certainly work well with my 845 amps. Or maybe a Kronzilla would be in order. Hmmmm. Maybe when I retire.
I bet your Lamms would work great with a pair of those.
I can see where the DarTZeel is enticing. I went back and forth myself for a while. With the Pass XA200.5s in one system and the 911 in the other, I can mix and match as need be. After four years with the 911, it is still my favorite power amplifier, precisely because I've never paired it up...
That is a great combination on the SL-1200. Have used that one myself with excellent results before upgrading the arm. Super easy to set up too.
If you go back to a headshell on that arm, check out an NOS Ortofon VMS20. You can usually find em for about 125, and they are scary good.
I remember a long time ago when I reviewed the Penaudio Serenades, I mentioned that they just didn't work well with tube amplifiers. (and I had tried them with about 8 or 9 different tube amps, from a 9 watt SET to some big ARC monos - all the same, no control in the bass) When I ran into the...
The LP-12 isn't my only table, and it isn't my favorite, but I still really enjoy playing records on it, just as I would driving a BMW 2002tii.
It doesn't have to be the "best" to be fun.
The fact that you think this is all a big conspiracy is laughable.
If you feel that you are an "innocent person that has been robbed without compassion," you really need to do your
homework more.
Most reviews miss something. Even when I've spent a couple of months listening to a component...
