I Believe most music lovers appreciate a piece of music not because how well it ‘image’ nor how much ‘detail’ is present but perhaps focus more on how coherent is the music or how deeply nuance of the performance.
Detail and imaging are important in music reproduction. But they can be over...
Thank you Dcathro for initiating a thought provocative thread. How and what audiophile listen for is diverse topic.
As PeterA pointed out, resolution and detail are different. I have been avoiding the use of the term ‘detail’ in favour of resolution for sometime in evaluating sound system...
Interesting to read about well float. They have been around for a long time. In Japan can buy them in major camera/appliance store for a reasonable price. I am sure audio exotic is selling them for a fortune.
They do work and one of the few isolation devices that do not significantly alter...
With new phono stages built in mc often are Lundahl with 1:20 or 1:25 ratios. But such ratio may not suit all cartridges and limited in the tonal quality to one type of step up.To get the best out of cartridges, I believe SUT matching is v important. Let’s leave the convenience to digital...
Yes to SUT!
I am using Phasemation pp2000 and a MSL sig. is on its way.
I didn’t believe in SUT until I heard a good one, now I have 15. All vintage though, hard to find newly made ones that are as capable and I have heard some of the most renown ones.
I used 1:15 for Phasemation and that works...
I think most of the shindo pre uses Toyo Cosmos pots. Shindo is still built to a price point. The Shindo magic is in the circuit design, as long as that is unaltered I believe there’s possible improvement to be had.
I had a Shindo Masseto preamp, it uses Toyo cosmos volume pots, and I upgrade to Elma 48 stepped attenuator and the improvement is significant. The problem volume potentiometer is that it’s logarithmic, and it’s not channel balance until a certain volume. It becomes tricky when there is too...
Hi @denimhunter.... I think we’re talking about different cartridges. Although I should have said MC A Mono for clarity.
https://www.ortofon.com/mc-a-mono-p-899
I know we are hence the clarification earlier.
I am intrigued by the Ortofon A Mono too. It looks to be a pretty lightweight, medium compliance cartridge. I would probably mount it in an arche headshell but I do wonder how it might mate with the heavier SME 3012 (3012r or series 1) tonearms? Has anyone heard one of these cartridge yet...
I have been rolling tubes for last 20odd years. Particular Tubes, esp vintage, always have a sound signature because of their specification. Of course different construction have slightly different sonics but branding doesnt mean a great deal because there was a lot of rebranding in the early days.
As far as I know, 5z3 can be used in place of 5u4 but not identical to 5u4. it has different voltage drop. It’s has slightly higher drop than 5u4 but lower than 5r4.
I never played my WE VT52 before, at least now I can try them on the Lampi. Interesting that u think they sound different fr the 45.
I am using globe 45 with the dac at the moment. What rectifier tube are u using with the 52? I am using type 80 as rectifier, find that matches well. rectifier...
Thanks. VT 52 have similar sound characteristics to 45?
i got a pair of western electric VT52 waiting for an amp (not sure what yet).
vt25 or 10y thoriated tungsten tube, never imagine can be used in the dac.
U have used VT52 with a Lampi? Using setting for 45 Or 300-B? the VT52 is 7v.
How did u find the sound compare with the 45? or 300-B?
Any experience with the tube u can share? Thanks
no doubt u know there are mk1, 2 and 3 for the 401 (however u want to call them). Mk1 used 301 motor into 401 chassis (supposed to be the best), I heard it before but no direct comparison. mk2 different motor and bearing I think. mk3 from latter years. U can tell from the strobe light, provided...
I am using old globe 45 and type 80 rectifier with the Lampi, my preferred combo so far. The good thing about the tube rolling in the Lampi is because u canhear the tone and character of the tube since it’s not really being used to ‘drive’ load.
I am using Voxativ Ampeggio, full range back...
Thanks.
I have Lampi big 7, didn’t know AD1, 4v tube, can be used (with adaptor) as output.
I also have a pair of WE VT52, was considering the A10 fr Yamamoto. I presume the VT52 sounds like 45 on stereoids.
Can anyone share their experience with AD1 valve/tube, ‘queen of european triode‘? Is the sound signature similar to 45 or 2A3? How does the EML AD1 compare to the early Telefunken AD1?
Very few amps use this valve/tube, except for Yamamoto Soundcraft A06-3. Anyone with experience withAD1 amps?
