Next to the clearaudio Goldfinger V2 the XV-1t is my second favorite cartridge. In my opinion, this Dynavector is an absolute recommendation for this tonearm.
Great idea, here is the answer:
A full class A amp capable of producing 100 or more watts per channel RMS into 4 ohms should be plenty enough to power MG20.7's.
Hi everyone,
I'm currently thinking about swapping my Quad ESL63s for a 20.7. The setup of my listening room is tailored for planar designs and a first test with an older 3.3 was very promising. I really liked the 20.7 at shows and at dealers, even though I always had to listen with solid state...
I think my strongest argument is the fact that Franc Kuzma's own cartridges weigh 17 grams. Otherwise there is no reason to choose this weight.
The Safir's gravity center is above its bearing point. If you measure VTF higher than the record height you will set VTF too high.
@ mtemur
please watch this video:
The record is not very wavy, but enough to make the Safir vibrate uncontrollably. The cartridge is a clearaudio Da Vinci, its complience is 15 µ/mN with a weight of 6.8 grams. Franc Kuzma recommends compliences of 25 µ/mN and lower for the Safir. In the next...

Instead of 3 degrees I could have written 93 degrees, but the article with its video should be very informative on this topic.
In my opinion, there are two major...
Due to its natural transparency, the Safir allows you to listen to records in a way that was previously unknown (to me). So, the VTA setup gets an increased importance. After installing a few cartridges, I finally ended up with the clearaudio Goldfinger v2 providing a special "prime line"...
I am very familiar with this tonearm. The R-Series provided this setup called lateral balance. The tonearm tube is J-shaped and this setting should be used to adjust the counterweight position laterally to balance the different weights of cartridges.
The tension on the cable can only be influenced by full 360 degree rotations in one direction or the other, which doesn't bring about any improvement in this point. So is the cable arch the Archilles verse of the Safir? I don't think so, because my solution works. There are other tonearms also...
I initially tried to optimize the setup with the Wally Tools too, but I quickly realized that I wasn't getting anywhere. So I found out that the tonearm cable should be routed in a flat curve, which must run horizontally to the back of the tonearm tube and at the same time be intercepted...
@Don_Camillo
please check out the new IO-M at Kondo. The revised version of this MC has no longer 1 ohm but now 1.5 ohms. Consequently, the SUT was adapted in parallel!
There is a simple rule of thumb: the cartridge's impedance should be mirrored by the sut, otherwise no linearity of the audio signal is possible. Is the cart's impedance lower the frequency response rises to the top end, is it higher it drops. In Japan you will find lots of articles that...
@jfrech
I own both arms, the 4Point 14 and the SAFIR, both are wired w/ Kondo ... a direct comparison is a waist of time, the SAFIR is superior, if not, your dealer is a setup dabbler!
Yes, this is correct. If the string is off the wheel, anti-skate is defunct. This is easily to check. If you move the arm towards the spindle, the rigger has to move up.
Thank you, the Wally Tractor is the perfect tool I'm looking for! Setting the correct mounting distance is plain, so its pivot to spindle ruler is not necessary. Important is that an 9 inch arc is provided to dial in the effective lenght!
As soon as the arm assembly rests on the arm tower the pivot point is masked. The horizontal pivot point mark ontop of the assembly is moving with the position of the arm. So you can't use this to determine the correct pivot point.
The Safir's template is quite problematic, the cardboard paper tends to be uneven and difficult to read. What templates do you use? The original tonearm geometry is Baerwald, has anyone tried Loefgren or maybe even SAT?
Thank you, your input helps me a lot to estimate its current performing status. My set has about 25 to 50 hours until now but it acts like a burning glas when evaluating the quality of differnet interconnects :)
Hi everyone,
I've just received this set brand new and I'm wondering how long its burn in time might be. Are there folks out who want to share their experience about this issue with me?
I like to recommend the Ortofon DS-3, it measures VTF correct. Watch Mickey Fremer's preview of his upcoming Safir rewiew. All tonearms with the 4Point bearing have to deal with this problem.
I turned both counterweights tightly against each other that they can still be adjusted. So I have the...
