America Shuts Down!

I am surprised some ambitious billionaire (think Bloomberg type) has not stepped in yet to create a well funded centrists party, completely distancing himself from the religious faction of the GOP, and catering to the centrists in the democratic party alienated by Obama's (perceived or real) push to turn America in a European style social democracy. I know a lot of people that would sign on in a heartbeat. What better way to create a lasting legacy that saving America from itself and dysfunctional polarized politics.

Given business leaders absolute disgust for the way the Republican Party handled this dispute I'd say that is becoming an increasingly likely possibility, or else they'll possibly find a way to permanently marginalized the more extreme aspects of the current party.

If he was less closely aligned with Obama, Warren Buffet could be the man. Plutocrats (Romney type) or take no prisoners ruthless entrepreneurs (think Ellison) Government is the root of all evil (think Koch brothers) or flat out morons (think Trump) do not stand a chance (no broad appeal). You need a slightly left leaning common sense successful business guy (think Bloomberg, Buffett). They can make big inroads on the left, and as long as they don't mess with the size of soda's they will appeal to moderate republicans as well....

The notion that an election is a lottery with the winner able to reward its supporters with money and favorable legislation has to end,

Well europe is not a democracy anymore, its now ruled by non elected bureaucrats in brussel cashing in big salaries and virtually paying no taxes.
Norway and switzerland are good democratic examples, Norway has a major account surpluss no debt problems , the eu banks are zombie banks having enourmus amounts of greek spanish portugese bonds, if they had to take the losses today and write them off they are bankrupt

Same is true for major US financial institutions (they were technically insolvent for years, and have been propped up through the mother of all backdoor bailouts in 2009 - 2012). Norway is just like the Kuwait of the and North does not count.

Well holland has had very large natural gas incomes over the years and if the politicians would have put it in a state fund ,we would have been rich as well , instead they waisted it all.
We are now propping up the eu banks ,because of their terrible investments.

The Dutch should have all voted Tegenpartij (Jakobse en Van Es). Geen gezeik, iedereen rijk!

The reason why guys like Buffet don't do this is because they are smart, they aren't buying the propaganda, they don't see the whole world pushed to the left because the fringe is viewing it from so far to the right, and they recognize that Obama IS a centrist. How so many people can fail to see that is a huge mystery. The "socialism" of Obamacare?" Please. Every developed democracy in the world is a hybrid of socialism and market capitalism. The one that didn't get a public health system until a decade into the 21st century and then chose one that protects private insurance, private care and prescription drug profits is definitively pro-business.

You're probably right. I agree Obama is a centrist (and a defense / national security hawk to boot), and Buffet sees no reason to create something to the right of him, nor does he see the need to create a new political habitat for moderate republicans alienated by the extremists and religious nutcases taking over the party. So someone from the alienated GOP camp would have to do it, and no obvious candidates with billions in the bank come to mind.

The Democratic Party has done a reasonable job of distancing itself from its extreme wings in actual practice, if not so much in rhetoric.

I once had great respect for the GOP. I personally hope they take back control of their party and the social conservatives, libertarians and tea party - whatever it is they stand for - break off on their own and leave the GOP to recover from this. Not sure that's what will happen, but hope springs eternal. I don't think the GOP brand is irreparably damaged. Hell, if the 70s didn't kill the Democrats....

Probably true too. Americans have notoriously short memory - which is a good thing in volatile times.

One of the things we have to thank Clinton for. He won the nomination, then immediately pushed the radicals in the party to the margins, and left their issues and priorities out of his platform. Very smart move. As a result, the Democrats are now the "conservatives" in the arena, in the classic definition of that term.

con·serv·a·tive: holding to traditional attitudes and values and cautious about change or innovation, typically in relation to politics or religion.

There's nothing "conservative" about the tea party or the libertarians. They are radicals by any conventional definition.

Well I guess that would be true if you percieve Obama to be a 'moderate'.

The current Democratic party is every bit, if not more to the left of center as the Republican party is to the right. Ironically, the Clinton/DLC wing of the party has been marginalized and replaced by leftists like Obama and Valerie Jackson. If Hiliary wasn't a women (no snide comments please), she'd never be the current Democratic front runner. Not suprisingly, Elizabeth Warren is already being pushed as an alternative. The current Democratic party doesn't have room for the moderates of the past like Scoop Jackson.

The above definition of 'conservative' only works if you believe history begins with the New Deal. The Democrats are reactionaries, not conservative in the traditional Burkean sense. They subscribe to view of government and society formulated at the turn of the last century that is already financially untenable. Indeed, questioning the wisdom of any part of the Progessive/New Deal agenda is heretical.

words of truth !

I sincerely wonder what planet you guys branding Obama & Co. as leftists extremist live on. His pick for Secretary of the Treasury was Geitner, a Wall Street insider. Tax rates under Obama are at a historical low. On his watch we saw the biggest rebound of profitability of corporate America and the biggest rebound of the stock market in modern history and CEOs have been making out like bandits. The dirty little secret is Obama is business' best friend.

I guess his "leftism" manifests itself by his refusal to completely write off the collateral damage of this corporate revival (the unemployed, underemployed, uninsured, outsourced and downsized), or having the audacity to pass legislation trying to get the USA to catch up with the civilized world by providing universal healthcare.

From the perspective of the other side if the world, if you guys think the democrats are way left of centre (or even left of centre at all) then you must have moved centre a long way from where it used to be

It is all relative. If your reference model is Franco's Spain, or Pinochet's Chile the Tea Party are moderates and Obama is a closet commie.
