Match ideas from other people may not work same in your system (amp + speaker), for recording is better to adjust the recorder in perfect condition because they are recording into tape so we check before record every time, but for repro listening I don't think we need a very flat frequency respond on play back of the deck ,it will depend how it combine with the whole system, and I believe that it is not too easy to hear the different between a flat and not too flat frequency respond but when you switch to another tape head preamp then you will find out very easy of the difference, also this will cost too much money, for up grade if you are a DIYER you can change some cap in the sound path of the circuit or more easy way of changing tubes. using more filters to make a flat frequency respond will down grade the transparency and emotions that is the choice of give and take

I really appreciate this response sir. I wondered how a person could, without hearing a head preamp in his/her system, purchase that preamp and expect it to sound good in that system. As I understand the Doshi is the only head preamp that offers a multitude of adjustments that will enable it to properly match a particular tape head. However, mine and others that don't provide these adjustments can't be used with a maximum number of tape decks. I am probably making this more complicated than it need be, but I was just asking the question. I am so thankful that many years ago I learned to listen and if I loved what I heard I was happy no mattered how it measured. I am going to continue to enjoy what I am hearing. The Manley owners manual is informative and answers many questions. Your preamp should be fine as it sounds like the setup was done correctly. It is always good to ask questions and become more knowledgeable,that's part of the fun of this hobby. Reading the Manley manual gives you a pretty good idea of the variables involved when using outboard electronics over the stock electronics. Very few stock electronics if any cannot be improved,but for most,I think the outboard preamp is the easier upgrade and sounds excellent. Enjoy the music.
