Anyone miss tube TVs?

Vacuum tubes in tv sets were horrible. As the tubes went bad, so did your picture. They were used out of necessity, not out of greatness.

No Tom, we simply installed it in the basement (upstairs was a color one to replace it;
an Hitachi color TV I believe).

And I simply built a single loudspeaker (with two drivers in it, and no crossover).
It was a rather large enclosure (about 26" high, and 14" wide, by a foot deep).
The woofer was a 10-incher one, and the tweeter a two-incher.

Then I connected it to the terminals of that single driver from the tube TV with a 15 feet run or so of speaker wire (you can see the circle slightly at the bottom of that cabinet), a 5 or 6 incher, and pretty good too (decent magnet & sound).
Then I installed my new designed speaker right behind my big comfy red leather chair, on a stand, at ear level.

That was back in 69 or 70, as I was experimenting with Mono back surround sound!
Very true! And from that arrangement, I watched Pink Floyd - Live at Pompeii,
which was broadcasted on TV, in 1972 or so. It was thee blast! :cool:
And I was stoned too (hashish & mescaline). But tell no one.

I remember going to the drug store during the 50's they had a tube testing machine and he would test the tubes and get new tubes at the store to repair the TV when the old tube went out.

Most of the tubes used in audio equipment today were designed to be used with tv's and not for audio use.

-----Kevin, I always thought that. Is it really true?

I don't know about most but what I see I think was used more for radio, radar and PA first.

All I know is that all audiophiles should be banned from the use of any tubes commonly used in vintage Fender, Vox and Marshall guitar amplifiers, and all of the modern variations on those classic designs. The remaining population of NOS tubes of those types should be used for making music. Just sayin'....:)

Snob. LOL.
