Have any good ideas been salvaged from DVD - Audio that have resulted in better sound in other applications that are around today, or is it a complete failure?

Does anyone have any good ideas on how to rip some of the disks?

I always liked DVD-Audio better than SACD, which frequently sounds overly smoothed over and boring in comparison to DVD Audio. Disks like Led Zeppelin's How the West was Won and some Classic records stuff is awesome.

Nothing good...... Rip it.

I've had great results with decrypting tools found HERE under "Downloads"

Thanks, Bruce. You Rock!!!

By the way, I never respected SACD until I heard on Playback Designs when it came out, a few years back. Do you have any idea why SACD sounds so awful on so much equipment?

I attribute the different sounds to the filter algorithms. I took the same players that were used in the M/M paper and recorded the output. Most had very steep filters, starting around 18k and one had a very relaxed filter.

To extract high resolution audio files from DVDs or DVD-Audio discs I have used DVD Audio Extractor. It's relatively straight forward to use, and allows you to save the extracted audio files in WAV or FLAC formats. It also claims to work for Blu-ray discs but I haven't used that functionality myself. They offer a 30 day free trial of the fully functional version to ensure it will meet your needs before purchasing. It's available for Windows, Mac, and Linux OSs. Highly recommended!

SACD sounds very good on the EMM Labs Meitner SACD players as well. Quite a step up from the SACD players most have heard. :)
