Boulder discontinues 1160/1161 amps, teases new 1162/1163 models

Called my dealer, the 1162 is $45K, the 1110 preamp is still $24K, but Boulder has let them know an across-the-board price increase is coming in April.

I also asked what was different, and apparently the new amps are biased more to pure class A operation, with commensurate increases in sound quality and power consumption.

The 1160/1161 would rest in AB and the bias would adjust as needed on a sliding basis.

According to the 1162 Instruction Manual, this thing only weighs 54 lbs. Does this amp have a switching power supply? Is this a misprint?

Were you looking at the manual for a 1163? As I recall the 1161 was 50'ish pounds. The 1160 sure as hell isn't, my wife and I barely got it up the garage stairs.

The manual for the new 1162 erroneously states the weight for what I presume will be the 1163 as it's the same as for the 1161.

Must be; the web page lists the weight as 135 lbs., shipping weight 215 lbs.:

1162 STEREO POWER AMPLIFIER

I'm guessing the 54 lbs. is the weight of the 1163, as that was the weight of the 1161.

Boulder designer Jeff Nelson discusses the new approach in these amps here:

AN IMPROVED POWER AMPLIFIER DESIGN
I like their overall tone and approach. In the various dealings I have had with Boulder (I owned a 3060 and a 3010) I always found them to be straight shooters. it is just welcome to read and hear from a manufacturer that doesn't use the usual audio hyperbole.

No, it was the 1162 manual, and what's clearly now an error (although still not corrected). Somebody probably copied it from the 1151/1161/TBA 1163 text.

I found this line funny:

We’ve received many questions about why we updated the 1100 Series Amplifiers, and we want to be transparent.

Yes, you're Boulder!

:D

Boulder announces the 1160/1161 are now out of production, to be replaced by the 1162/1163.

I'll bet you that the simaudio 861 will be better than the 1162, there was a review on here from a guy that had the Dan D'Agostino momentum s250 and after a month of trying the 861 against his s250 he said that the SIM audio 861 was better in every area and the s250 sells for $44,000 US the 861 for $22,000 US so I have no doubt that this will probably beat the Boulder 1162.

For what its worth, I was told by a Boulder representative that they are working on a set of new 3000 series products and that new 3000 series (perhaps going to be 3100) amps are, barring unforeseen circumstances, going to be their next big release.
