Canon's new Telephoto lenses

Canon has cheated the laws of physics with new telephoto lenses which are smaller and lighter. I had not seen them in person until I went to their CES booth. Here is the new 300mmf2.8

It is 13% lighter than the current one I own. It looked surprisingly small in person. It is supposed to be faster and sharper.

Alas, it is also quite a bit more expensive (same is true of the redesigned 500f4 and 600f4).

I'm waiting to read reviews. Some have implied the quality is not quite as high with the new lenses. In my case, assuming I could afford them, the thing limiting image quality would be the guy behind the camera, not the lens...
