I have also failed to once again laud Philip and his On A Higher Note company. His Vivid Giya speakers never cease to amaze me. These are truly wonderful speakers and worthy of audition
I also met the developer of the reel to reel based on a Revox frame. Very nice man. I asked him to have a look at WBF and become a member as we have so many tape heads here. He said he would
Arian's sending me his Sonorus ATR10 for review He's a member of the LAOC audio society and showed his deck and new electrostatic speakers at the Newport Show (along with a holographic imaging system ). You should have seen him over on the Tape Project website
I spent Vout 1/2 hour in the scaena room. They had the smaller series (12 drivers per side) and the huge subs in static display in the front if the room. It sounded very good one thing which bothered me about their set up was with the ribbon tweeters to the inside rather than the outside as I feel it should be however the reps said definitely not. Any thoughts Elliott when you set them up.
BTW the subs are huge and look like the front of a jet plane. If I would buy the speaker I would use different subs. I passed Nola several times but no music coming from the room so didn't go in
I have run my Maggies both ways over the years and found it varies with the room and listening position. (Ditto the Apogees I have heard and helped set up.) I think I have the tweeters on the outside now but am not really sure... I always try both ways and listen/measure whenever setting them up again. Usually swap once or twice to be sure, or until I get tired of moving them...
Steve et. al. -- What was your choice for best in electronics?
Ian leaving for the airport soon so I'll try to add more thoughts later. One last caveat. We spent the longest time in the Audio Research room with the Sonus Faber Aida during both days. There is no question thT "for my ears" the Best In Show was that room. Absolutely mesmerizing. As I also said I would have loved to have heard the XLF. I did bump into my local dealer at Philip O'Hanlon's reception on Wed evening. He told me he had a pair of XLF on order and soon to be delivered. He has also already sold a pair due for delivery in the next week.
Just spoke to Ken Stevens from CAT. Heard his new Statement amp played with MBL speakers. Definitely an improvement over his last amp which BTW is not too shabby either
Hi Steve, great report thanks. Those CAT amps you make referrence to paired up with the MBL's list for $70k. I actually owned the JL3 Sig MK2's a few years ago which are below these which I had paired up with my MBL 101E's and it was okay.
My favorite after having many numerous amps are the VAC's Statement 450 mono's and Sig MK2a pre paired up with these speakers, this match is by far my fav and a match made in heaven. No others I owned nor tried come close.
Re: ZU...I wasn't impressed with their room at the T.A.V.E. Show. Mind you it was their Canadian distributor demonstrating, and they seemed to be more interested in selling other gear as opposed to high-lighting the potential of the ZU speakers. Major bummer since I really wanted to have a good listen.
Hasn't been released yet and the 3D was underwhelming. IMO the bar has been raised Mao much that the LG ILED will be the one by which all others are judged.
