even after amost full bottle...

agree. i may not listen at venue level volume all the time (sometimes its too loud) but i listen loud enough deliver that in your chest impact and a sound stage that comes alive at volume. imo to little volume does no justice to the music regardless of genre.

Exactly, Hugh. But there's plenty out there that have had distortion-filled systems for so long that they've actually trained / conditioned themselves over the years that it is proper to listen at much lower volume levels to preserve their hearing. Considering some of those systems I've heard, I don't blame them one bit. :)

But I'll admit, I coulda' used some ear plugs recording the Van Halem piece. Still, it was an exhilerating 2 minutes.

The main point I'm making is that avg level and peak levels are drastically different things. On my iPhone SPL meter the range between avg and peak is typically 10-15 db. So if my avg is 90, it will be peaking at 100- 105 db. A small chainsaw runs around 105 db. I f you go out for an hour or two with that, any audiologist will tell you the result will likely be permanent hearing loss that may only manifest itself 30 years later.

So when you say your Van Halen recording is at 106 average, I'm not sure what to make of that. Is there NO dynamic range showing on your SPL meter?

Here's a well-known piece that I'd venture falls into at least the bottom 10% maybe even worst bottom 5% of my limited library content. From a poorly -engineered perspective that is. Even so, it's still rather muscal especially at louder volumes.

Of course a little mad dog 20/20 or strawberry boonesfarm don't hurt neither. For the wife I mean.

Good music tho. 20/20 reminds me of the 70’s ... just awful stuff even when desperate
