external clock to be or not to be

Hello people. I just heard about your whatsbest forum here and it looked like a significant upgrade to other audio forums I periodically partake in so here's my first.

I have an Esoteric K-03XD and it is an ungodly great CDP. At the time of purchase my audio dealer asserted that that player when paired with the appropriate external clock (from Esoteric but I didn't recall the model number at the time) would outperform the K-01XD acting in standalone mode. That seemed a bit far fetched but I couldn't afford the K-01XD anyway so it was a moot point.

But inasmuch as I am thrilled with the way my gear is sounding at present and have zero complaints, as a lifelong upgrader I am curious as to what might be achieved. On another audio forum there is a guy talking like an engineer who is always insisting that there are no benefits to using an external clock but my attitude is that there are several highly reputable firms (Esoteric of course being one of those) and they surely would not risk their businesses by peddling snake oil.

I do have the sort of relationship with my dealer in which I can demo anything in my home but I am always cognizant and respectful of recognizing the limits of that relationship. And so would rather feel that there is a substantial chance that I would find enough enhancement of SQ to warrant the demo.

And while I am at it I will ask for input on what would be a suitable cable. The bulk of my cabling is by JPS and I love the stuff.

Anyone?

Hello and please allow me to offer you a very warm welcome to the What's Best Forum.

As for clocks, I have been through 3 so far. With each upgrade, there was an easy difference (all for the better) in the end result as to what hit my ears. While I do have an Esoteric transport, I have not tried an Esoteric clock. Currently running a Mutec REF 10 SE 120.

I wasn't too enamored with the sound of the transport when I got it, but am thoroughly enjoying it now, after the addition/upgrade of just the clock. It was eye (or rather ear) opening for me. FWIW.

Just get the Mutec REF 10 SE 120.

Much better than any Esoteric clock, while ... cheaper.

There is one used listed on Audio Mart @ $2500 (basic, not the SE 120 verison), which would be an excellent starting point. If you like whet you hear you can upgrade later at no loss.

As an FYI. Please do not forget the importance of the clock cable. YMMV, depending on your system but it does have the potential to make you ponder things in life......I'll just say that for now.

A good quality 10 mHz master clock is a substantial improvement as is using a proper clock cable.

Cybershaft is an excellent alternative.
