Hi guys - I've read on forums a couple of times where people feel metal base GZ34's improve the sound more than "regular" non-metal base NOS GZ34's.

Has anyone actually tried a metal base GZ34 in any Aries-Cerat gear and can you please share your impressions?

Thank you.

I have not tried the metal base, but I have tried a GZ34 Mullard UK branded Siemens NOS 1966 that I bought from Tube World Express. To me it sounds amazing…..

Metal base Mullard? Those are rare and $$$. It's one of the only of it's type I don't own. All NOS GZ34/5AR4 are good ime, some differences for sure, but all good. I'm currently using a Sylvania Big Bottle, I think they may be the most neutral. Mullard are a little rich/warm. Wouldn't be surprised if the metal base Mullard is indeed among the best, but if so it's not likely a night and day difference. Best value and possibly one one of the better tubes overall is Matsushita or some other Japanese brand with seam-tops. Made with Mullard gear sold to Japan, they have black getters which is a sign of a hard vacuum and sound is also very neutral.

I have a few amps that use GZ34 tubes as rectifiers and IME Philips or Mullard metal base generally sound best. I do agree however that they have become very expensive.
My alternative of choice has been the Brimar 5R4gy black plate. They have a lower internal resistance which can contribute to better imaging/soundtsage
You can generally find these for +/- $200/per

Thank you. I think I read on one of these posts AC only recommends 5AR4/GZ34 in their gear with them.

Which AC components would use the GZ34?
