By the time it's all done we are expected to get about 25cm (10-11") of the white stuff. Toronto hasn't seen a snowfall like this in almost 5 years. I wanted to get out and just walk around in it for a bit, so I went across the road to pick up some stuff I needed anyway. Was fun!
The winters have become easier since you left (climate change and all that), but it's kind of sad in a way. Some years it doesn't even feel like we have 4 seasons anymore, so a major snowfall like this is almost a nice change. No doubt I'm glad to be home for it though.

I think that much of the snow that potentially can fall in the Toronto area actually melts and evaporates due the fact that the locals are full of hot air

It's wind direction Steve. The lake effect happens when moisture from the lake is added to the snowfall, becoming heavier. The worst storms I find come from the south east much like today's storm. But right now with the rear patio lights on the back yard looks incredible. My home lies on the edge of the original Lake Ontario shore line. My back knows plenty about lake effect. An easy 24" inches here close to the lake with Brampton (@ 10? miles north) seeing less than 1" before my girlfriend came down to save me!
