My sister shared something she read about over the weekend.

iOS 5 allows for multi-tasking so, check what's running in the background of your iPads / iPhones - to help with speed & battery life. Use four fingers to swipe upwards or depress the Home button twice quickly. The screen "shifts" upwards and you will see all the programs you've got still running.

Touch and hold anyone of the icons and you will get a little minus sign on it's top left and it shakes. Tap on it again to shut it down.

When I checked, I had at least a dozen of them running in the background! I've simulated and taken a screenshot below for your information.
