I have the new Lumin T3x running in my second system, and currently burning in. I own an X1 in the main system, and my T2 was feeling long in the tooth. I had wished that Lumin would produce a T3 with a LPS, which they did with the T1 before they migrated to a switching power supply for the T2 and T3. When they used an LPS in the P1 and P1 mini, my hopes increased. This weekend, my dealer sent me home with one to demo for the week, but based on the first few hours this one is likely to stay.
When I moved to the T2 from the D2/Sbooster, there was lots of talk about the benefits and perils of adding an Sbooster. I heard many users state they felt the T2 switching power supply was just fine and minimal benefits to be gained by an LPS. I later added the X1 and relegated the T2 to my second system so I was less focused on upgrading its power supply. There’s always been a hint of digital glaze in comparison to the X1.
So I was pretty excited to read of the T3x and figured this would be a good time to consider an upgrade. In just the first few hours I’m hearing clear improvements. Bass especially is more full, detailed and robust. The hint of digital haze is gone - it sounds much closer to the X1 than the T2. Lots of detail buried in tracks (like being able to isolate background singers and double tracking vocals) that the T3x seems to pull out, and which was less present in the T2. Taller soundstage was a bit of a surprise. It's more transparent but not bright.
I’m going to give it the requisite 50 hours before comparing to the X1 but I’m already thinking it’s a shoe in to replace the T2. I’m speculating that the improved chipset has some role, but really thinking that LPS is a key reason for the improvements I’m hearing. I've ordered up an optical switch and some Finisar SFP modules to try out the optical ethernet connection, which did improve the X1.
More to come, but if the first listen is any indicator, the T3x could be a mini X1 for about 1/3rd the cost.
