Mattress

If you go the memory foam type, make sure it has the gel technology to keep you cool and avoid the dreaded foam hot spot types that make you sweat.

We are looking for a low toxicity mattress (and box springs) , preferably one of the new foam, better support variety.

Recommendations?

You must realize sex is MUCH better on a bed set with box springs and innerspring mattress.

Thumbs down for foam.

Sonna versa coolmax. The best investment in years. Split for each sleeper. Coolmax cover. Breathes well, no heat issues. Expensive but worth every penny in my experience. My wife thought it was extravagant, now she l

Well...actually I have a hybrid implentation of foam and spring in the matress and an almost 1 inch thick Tempur foam on top, works! :)

I say find a local store that carries many brands and lay down on all of them. Only you can tell if something feels right for you. My wife and I did it about 5 years ago. I too was looking at a memory foam mattress but after laying on one, turning over a couple times, I decided it wasn't for me. After all was said and done, we chose a pillow top Stearns & Foster.

+1 for Stearns and Foster. Though the best mattress i have ever slept on was...get this...in Africa on safari. They had hand stuff a mattress using horse hair, and i am telling you...support, support, support, and incredible comfort. It must have taken forever to stuff that thing as hard as they did. And yet being horse hair and straw, it was also giving...crazy good and nothing i have ever slept on compared. Then again, i am not sure i would want to have once-live animal stock in my house permanently without some serious de-contamination for germs, bugs, etc.

I agree with posts that say... try it yourself first. But.

Several years ago I bought a very highend MB set. It was touted as the brand the Queen of England sleeps on. It was three times the price of best posturepedic. The first night in it I was like "enveloped" in clouds. The next day my back hurt. One week later I could barely walk from the pain. Thank gosh for a great return policy. Make sure you can return whatever you buy. You spend 1/3 your life here.

I used to stay in hotels so much that my youngest son's name and weight were put on a hotel marquis when he was born. During that period of my life I became a fan of hotel mattresses, and Marriott uses Jamison brand. That works for me.

Trivia: Ray Charles always stayed at Holiday Inn because their rooms were all alike. I have no idea about the mattresses they use, however, because I never stayed there.

I also find high-end hotel mattresses very comfortable. Problem is, if you go any mattress store they tell this and that model are used by those hotel chains. I am confident they are not however. We bought one and it quickly sagged. No hotel mattress has such short life. I think they custom manufacture them for the hotels and it is a marketing gimmick to sell them with that designation.

That said, I have seen the hotels themselves sell them so I might try that next.

One good thing to know is that Marriott sells the exact Jamison that they use in their hotels. They even have a website set up for it. I suppose the best way to test one is to spend the night at a local Marriott, Ritz-Carlton, Courtyard, Towne Place, Fairfield Inn or Hampton Inn. :)

Thanks. Probably a better way to go than shopping in a store where you only get to lay on them for a few minutes.

We have bought $5,000 mattresses which we loved at first but they are sagging like all the rest we have bought. They put soft padding on top which makes them really comfortable in the store and the first few months but it then compresses and you are sleeping in an uncomfortable bowl. The thing feeds on itself since the padding makes it impossible to flip the mattress. So it wears out even sooner.
