My analog system consists of an AMG Viella TT with AMG 12” arm and Ortofon Anna cartridge. Pure sonic bliss! However about 12 months ago I started noticing intermittent noise that I initially thought was LP groove damage. At first it only occurred on rare LP’s but it got worse until I realized it wasn’t the LP’s. I rechecked arm and cartridge setup to no avail. Finally I sent the Anna to Peter Ledermann for repairs. He called me back and said that the coils were severely corroded and asked me where I live. I told him on a bluff about 80 ft above the ocean, and that metal corrosion is a constant problem.
He’s going to try to repair my Anna but he and I are both concerned that this is going to recur, and my Anna is only around 3 yrs old. I already use a TT cover and I’ve been struggling to think of a way to prevent recurrence. One thing I’ve considered is buying a new tonearm with a removable headshell and removing the cartridge/headshell after each use. Perhaps even storing it in a dessicator.
I’d appreciate hearing what people think about this solution or if there might be better solutions. I don’t want to give up my analog system!
