MQA, Worse than FLAC?

Someone on that thread (it might have been Chris Connaker, the Audiophile site owner himself) also mentioned that the videos by Goldensound (links post #3) are catching on among influential people in the industry. They may slowly realize they have been scammed by MQA.

I come kind of late trying to understand digital. I own an mqa compatible dac and subscribe to tidal.
So that is the basis for my interest in mqa

It is akin to my cable company sending me fox news
Thanks for the reference.

I have it from a reliable source that MQA causes testicular cancer.

I’m almost certain the MQA people shot Abe Lincoln. I found “Sic semper tyrannis” hidden in an unfolded MQA version of “Dixie.” Coincidence?!? Perhaps…
It seems to me that you guys finally cracked the MQA code.

@Gregadd I found those videos pretty convincing. Up until then I had ignored MQA for the simple reason that it was too easy to make a circuit that could turn on a (blue) LED. I will continue to ignore it and play my LPs; should there only be something that is digital only my non-MQA DAC can handle it for now.

MQA can easily win one of the top places in the most debated audio-related topics. I would risk to say that this is simply one of the reasons why it cannot be ignored. Whether someone enjoys it or not is a different question entirely.

Let's not forget that for many people who begin their audio journey MQA could be the best format they know. This is one of the reasons why it is so popular.

There maybe some truth here. It is difficult to ignore mqa. Otoh it aspires to be redbook and fails. That hardly qualifies as the best.
It is difficult to ignore because it is on my dac and subscription service. Without my request.
As for you and those who agree, enjoy.

I am far from saying that MQA is the best format there is. It is, however, just because I have access to pretty much any format available on the market. I know how to get/find the uncompressed, lossless formats. I recognise that many people, especially the youngest generations grew up on YouTube, Spotify and a small BT speaker and did not have a chance to taste the magic of Vinyl, Stereo, cassettes or even CDs. I am fully aware that many people may have not even heard of SACD, ISO, DSF, WAV, AIFF or FLAC and ALAC. If you are embarking on your audio path, and all you know is MP3, then MQA could be the best format you came across.

This is getting a little uncomfortable. I have no desire to take you down.
If you are paying extra for a premium format, it should be, you know, premium. Redbook is generally available with no premium. You are aware you have damned mqa with faint praise.

I have yet to encounter MQA since I only listen to either ripped CDs or downloads from HDTracks.

This is a very interesting statement about MQA. Isn't everything like this? I don't listen to Classical so I guess it is on my subscription service without my request. I only use usb on my Dac so I guess all of the other inputs are there without my request.

The good thing about any format or anything one doesn't like is they don't have to listen to it. I must say the whole MQA discussion is like the old girlfriend in high school that breaks up with you. You say you don't like her anymore but you keep talking about her to all your friends.

If MQA isn't your thing great, don't listen to it. Life is way too short to listen to something one doesn't like.

But I pay alimony,child support,share child
custody, she is living in my house and my friends keep telling me what a great girl she is.

Smile.

@Gregadd , I am not sure if that refers to my comment. If yes, then I am not sure where your reaction comes from or if you are perhaps slightly misreading my points. Our statements are not mutually exclusive. On the contrary, I agree with most of your points. I fully agree that if you are paying premium you should be getting what you pay for as a general rule. That applies to audio and beyond.

I also agree with the fact that MQA is not a lossless format.

All I am saying is that there are many people, who listen to MQA as there is a chance they believe it is the best format there is. Some people recognise MQA as a premium format.

Really? You seem very argumentative (anti MQA) and looking for a fight from anyone who may disagree with your basic premise. Talk about ignoring reality.

A difference of opinion about technology and sound quality in audio? How utterly shocking.

Yep, different perspective is pretty much everything. I am regularly meeting people who believe that MQA is a fantastic solution comparing to what they have been listening to all their lives and people who stay away from MQA as far as possible as well as a lot of analogue loyalists who are not really bothered with the digital realm. That is the beauty of free choice.
