I recently purchased a used record of Previn conducting A Midsummer Night’s Dream on an original UK EMI label. The sound is terrible having a thin sound. I think it’s because it’s a quad recording. I have lots of Previn records on emi that sound great. I will not buy any more of these. A great recording of this piece is by Peter Maag on Decca.

I don't know how to interpret your comments. Does it sound thin because it is a quad recording and you are playing only the front channels? Or, is it your experience that quad recordings sound thin for another reason? I have many that are far from that.

BTW, I agree with you about the Maag Mendelssohn.

Discrete quadraphonic records according to the JVC/ Victor CD4 standard are stereo records with extra HF signals in a bandwith between approy. 30-45Khz which contain the rear channel signal information. If it sounds thin in stereo, it will also sound thin in quadro. So it does not depend on the equipment.
