Recommended Las Vegas Shows

We just got back from 4 days in Las Vegas. I am not a gambler and never have been. We went to meet some family members from Toronto and to enjoy some good dining as well as some Las Vegas shows. Over the years I can say that I have seen just about every show on the strip and continue to have my favorites.

1. Towering way above all other shows on the strip and IMO the one by which all others need to be compared is Beatles Love at the The Mirage. I have now seen this show three times and each time it continues to leave goose bumps as well as a lump in my throat as to how great the Beatles truly were. Then to have probably the best Cirque du Soleil act in Vegas leaves you absolutely breathless. On top of this the sound is second to none as each seat has built in speakers for a true surround experience. You will leave the theater feeling that you have spent an evening with the Beatles. In fact there is one part of the show where you hear the four of them talking as they seem to appear in silhouette on the stage jumping from one spot light to the next. This show remains my number one pick

2.. Prior to my first seeing Beatles Love threee years ago my perennial favorite was "O" at the Bellagio. The Cirque Du Soleil act is like nothing you will ever see as it literally takes place in water. Some of those in the act do some feats that will truly leave you speechless. This is a show that one will never tire of and completely different in theme from Beatles Love. It is not to be missed

3. Rounding out my top 3 in Las Vegas is another Cirque du Soleil show at the MGM Grand called Ka. This too is so vastly different than any other Cirque du Soleil show as the stage which was built for the show is a one of it's kind that that cost many millions of dollars to build. The stage literally moves in all three dimensions as the performs are acting out the show. Totally different than the the other two but if you have seen Love and O then Ka is my next recommendation.

4. I name this next show not because it was so good (I would give it a 6-7/10) but rather it is new,in the recently opened Aria Hotel (which in and of itself needs a walk through as this is opulence at it's very best. The show is the newest Cirque du Soleil and is The Elvis Tribute. For those Elvis fans this is nostalgia at it's best and gives a capsule commentary of Elvis' life in 1 1/2 hours. The Cirque du Soleil part is minimal and sketchy at best but the theater is spectacular with terrific audio as well as old film of Elvis. In fact I found that through most of the show I was watching the film of Elvis most of the time rather than the show itself. Not one of the greatest shows on the strip but music is good , the theater and acoustics are incredible and the Aria is worthy of a walk through.

5. If you are into magic then David Copperfield at the MGM Grand as well as Criss Angel at the Luxor are the two to see.As good as Criss Angel is on his Mind Freak TV show his show at the Luxor drags between his illusions as it is also a Cirque du Soleil show.

Steve,

I basically agree with your assessments, except for Elvis, which I have not seen. The only place where I would differ is about "O". I have seen it 7 times and still am amazed at how original it is. While the Beatles Love is great music and a great tribute, it is way less out of the box as a Vegas show. One show which you did not mention is Le Reve, at the Wynn. It is Dragon's successor to "O", which he also created. It is truly worthy of a visit for your next visit. Sorry that you will not be able to join Marty and me at CES and KA.

During the last CES, wife and I saw two shows: Beatles Love at the Mirage and the Le Reve at the Wynn. After the Le Reve, we ate at Alex. Guess we didn't do too badly considering we had no idea what to see and where to eat.

I did enjoy the multichannel sound at the Beatles Love and how they used two small speakers right behind the head rest area of the seat to create the MCH effects in such a large place with varied locations of seats. Wife was a little disturbed at me for looking around for main and the rear speakers during the performance - only the audio enthusiasts would look for speaker placement in Vega shows...

The Le Reve was visually stunning and the nubile women in skimpy swimming suites - threshing around in the water did add just a little, to me anyway...

Phantom of the Opera (Venetian) was pretty good. Sort of like a cliff note version of the original which I got to see on Broadway. Less drama straight to music and effects. Musical theater for folks that aren't into musical theater. :)

I'll be sure to catch Love next month as Steve suggests. I concur about the other shows. I'm not a big fan of Elvis and neither is my wife so maybe I'll pass.

I'm intrigued about Zumanity because it supposedly has the most number of injuries to cast members. After seeing O and Ka, I wonder what it is they are doing that could be even more dangerous. Any feedback?

Oh, and how about Blue Man Group? Worth it or is the BluRay enough?

I've seen Blue Man Group. Very interesting but very loud and not conducive for good hearing. As for Phantom, there are better places to see it than Las Vegas

Jack it is very easy to get mid week tix for Love. I got fabulous seats for the 5 of us on a Tuesday night. Don't sell Elvis short but just not in the league of the others but it is a new show and still undergoing change.

Jack if you have trouble getting tix from the Mirage Hotel PM me and I can give you a good source

One other show I mention in passing and worth a look is Defending The Caveman playing at The Excalibur. I mention the show out of tribute to my very good friend and fellow member here Rob Becker (rsbeck) who wrote the show and performed it on Broadway where it was the longest running solo performance and then taken both national and international.

Here is a short blurb

Understanding the opposite sex may never be easy, but Kevin Burke breaks it all down for you in “Defending the Caveman” at Excalibur. He stars as the narrator for this hilarious one-man comedy, created by comedian/writer Rob Becker, that attempts to debunk the age old myth that men are all jerks.

We saw Zumanity when we went to Vegas for CES 2008. It was alright.

I'd see Cher if I'll be in Vegas anytime soon, almost like going to Zumanity

Here's one for the car nuts... go over to the Imperial Palace and in the rear on the 5th floor is: "The largest collection of privately owned classic cars in the world"!
I went there for a few hours and was pretty much blown away... Rolls's, Duesy's, Ferrari's, Jag's and much much more.
Oh, IMHO, the best show at Vegas is actually outside of Vegas... it's called the Grand Canyon Tour, and it makes the others look pretty paltry by comparison:D
The Hoover Dam tour also isn't too shabby either:D

I was in Vegas with my family over Thanksgiving and saw The Jersey Boys and O and both were great . Had dinner at Tao. Best meal I have had in Vegas. Wish I had known about the car exhibit.

Husk and Steve, I was there for Thanksgiving too... should have had a Forum get together:D
I didn't go on the chopper at the Canyon, but I did go on the glass skywalk.... It's FANTASTIC:cool:
But, you have to be ok with heights...you look 4000 Ft straight down:eek:
However, the platform is built like a Brick House...can apparently support four loaded 747's:D
The view is to die for and I highly recommend it IF you aren't too scared of heights.:)

Having backpacked in the Grand Canyon, starting from the rim and hiking 8 miles down to the River, spending a few days at the River and then back up to the rim, I can unequivocally state the Grand Canyon is one place everyone should visit, even if it just to view it from the rim. Absolutely magnificent. Very difficult to photograph, however, because photos just don't capture its depth.

Ron, Totally agree with you. I took about 200 pics at the Canyon...none show the enormity or depth. IMHO, the Grand Canyon rim offers some of the most magnificent views on the planet.
