What are everyone’s views on whether to keep the reels in plastic bags? I know the Tape Project recommends this. Others, like Hemiolia, do not include plastic. Acoustic Sounds ships some in plastic and others without plastic…
I guess it helps maintain more consistent humidity.
Proper temperature and humidity control are certainly very important for tape storage. I've never heard of storing analog tape reels in plastic bags before. Maybe the type of tape that Tape Project uses requires this sort of care?
I don't own any pre-recorded tapes. Most of my tape reels were used to record live radio broadcasts of classical music performances.
All my new reels from RTM come in plastic bags..... which are in a cardboard box. I don't see leaving them in the bags in a temp/humidity controlled enviro a problem.
I use plastic bags for all the shipments I make. However, I do take the bags off for the tapes in my collection. I don't keep recorded tapes in pancakes. If I did, I probably would keep them in bags for better security against unraveling. Larry
