I don't know, but the passion for extreme sports makes people to do things that are just crazy. I guess that holding that kind of records will make him "happy".
But I read that the physician that assisted him during the preparation is the husband of a woman astronaut who died on the Columbia shuttle in 2003. One of the goals of this mission was to obtain data regarding the possibility to escape from a shuttle in trouble even if already in the stratosphere.
