Super Bowl LIX halftime show

I don't particularly like Rap, just not my cup of tea. I think despising anyone who listens to it is a bit extreme though. My 30yo son listens to it, and he is a DJ at a country music station. Fortunately for me we connect with jazz and other genres....

I turned the Grammys off after a few minutes too. I just can’t relate.

It’s not my cup of tea, I don’t want to hear them spilling the tea, and I can’t read the tea leaves.
My simplified view is there music produced from a source of artistic expression and there’s music produced by commercial bean counters. Most, not all, that you see on Grammys is the later. No thanks.

@twitch are you using "rap" and "gangsta rap" interchangeably?
No, but regardless I don't listen to either, obviously !

Do you consider Kendrick "gangsta rap"? Do you consider Kendrick violent? Can you please clarify what you mean by "those people"?

I don't know the man personally , as for him being violent in his work I have no clue and have zero interest in listening to him.

As for your 'those people' question...............how many times does that need to be answered before it sinks in ?? For the last time, my disdain for that and those which promote violence.

man, you guys are something, LOL ! No wonder I prefer High School football games and great marching bands...... :p

Gotcha, thanks. I guess I just found it weird that you kept bringing up violence and gang activity, especially when neither applied to Kendrick's halftime show. The motivation behind that association seemed to come completely out of left field; I didn't understand why you'd bring it up unless you were attempting to paint an entire genre with a broad brush.

Not directed to you specifically @twitch, more just the sheer number of posts in this thread expressing suppressive sentiment. It's disappointing that in a forum dedicated to the reproduction of an artistic medium (music!), that so many would completely downplay & dismiss the validity a genre of that art form just because they don't understand or personally enjoy it.

Well I think it's fair to say that many of us here subjectively feel it's not worth a damn. As for those that do, all well and good, enjoy !

I liked the performance, much better than the cacauphony of dog whistles in this thread. I follow brother Bob's advice:
Come mothers and fathers throughout the land
And don't criticize what you can't understand
Your sons and your daughters are beyond your command
Your old road is rapidly agin'
Please get out of the new one if you can't lend your hand
For the times, they are a-changin'

My musical bias up front. I am100% classical.

Do hip hop stations play what would be considered the "rap classics" of the past (I assume they exist) similar to what country western and rock radio stations do? For me, regardless of the "type", that's an indicator of the staying power of the genre, the artist's creativity and their musical abilities. Or will it suffer the fate of disco, grunge, etc.?

FWIW, I find most "current" music to fall into the disposable category. Here today and forgotten and not played within a month. And I used to really enjoy the music during the Grammy Awards ceremony but now, I find it quite uninspiring and commercial. And it was all lip synch. Ugh! On the other side, the artists who performed at the CW Award show were live miked and were quite impressive. And I am not a CW fan.

And then there is the annual Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts awards program. IMHO, the best. Will be interesting to see what happens in the future given the recent termination of the President and the entire Board of Directors. Just when you thought it was safe to go outside.

And thanks to all who responded to this thread. I learned alot.

@thedudeabides--The answer to your question about whether hip hop stations play “‘rap classics” the answer is yes. Rap is steeped in its own history and tradition.

I can't say on account of "no political content in the forum". Thank you for admitting your misunderstanding, and have a great day!
So you throw out an unsubstantiated innuendo directed at me without any proof knowing you can use that exit strategy for a non response (against forum rules) if I chose to challenge? Talk about personal character and integrity. You are a classy guy. Of yes. I forgot. You also have a great day.
