The Two Channel Illusion

You guys are so non-zen. I live near Nyack, which is chock full of mysticists, faith healers, rolfing, past pet channelers, and wheatgrass drink stores. A Buddha comes with the territory. When I move to Texas, I'm thinking of a life sized sculpture of Roy Rogers. or something.

Buddah Holly was Texan :D

What's wrong with Rolfing? :)

Wouldn't it be true if your speakers were placed more forward of your gear that this would not be in issue? My speakers are placed about a foot ahead of my system rack and they have no problem creating a phantom centre image.

ditto

I always like hearing that winter road report "chains required from Nyack to..." :)

Actually, I'd be curious to try it? Have you? I just wanted to share, for those that don't know Nyack, that it is a tad bohemian/old hippie-ish, not that there's anything wrong with that. It's actually a pretty cool area, generally speaking, way less uptight than Westchester, where we lived for about 8 years after leaving Brooklyn. But I sorta drew the line at the past pet life channeler. (I found her when I was considering 'seed therapy' as a way to break cluster headaches).

The amps and speakers have to be in close proximity; i have enough slack in the cables to bring the speakers forward, but given the constraints of my room, that would force my listening position too close to the rear wall. I'm sure the Buddah could interfere too, but I have a dramatic center image- in fact, most non-audio people who hear this system comment on the fact that the voice seems to focused from the space between the speakers. I suspect, with horns the issue may be less acute than with a dynamic speaker that radiates out somewhat to the sides. But, the set-up for me, given this room, is the best compromise. All the front end gear, TT, phono stage, line stage, is on a wall some distance away, in what could effectively be considered a large alcove~ alot of systems here seem to have all that gear between the speakers as well.
When I move to Tx., obviously the room is going to change, hopefully dramatically, for the better. For one, I hope to have a much larger room, and have way more length to place with, which I'm hoping will improve the bass. (I will be working with an acoustician). And I'll be able to do some additional things I either never got around to, or because of the location of this room, at the top of the house, made it difficult.

No but I know a couple of people who studied with Ida Rolf. While one can argue over the techniques involved in Rolfing, her basic concepts about issues with the body being more correlated to the connective tissue than muscle is pretty widely accepted nowadays. One of her students, Tom Myers, has spun off a very interesting corollary called "anatomy trains." Really interesting on how the body is assembled and works.

Kal-Apparently so. We hava a few people on this forum who think the phantom center channel illusion doesn't work and think we really need a real center channel.
Well, I do but that does not mean that the illusion with 2 channels is a failure.

do you think 2 channel with a music picture between( and sometimes besides ) and behind (with height) the speakers is perfect then , its still far from reality, i think 3 channel would be worth the try if implemented well

I actually mean something like 3 track tape with a 3 channel pre /3 channnel power amp and 3 high quality speakers
