I do have a similar question whether to stick with USB and buy a new DAC or adding USB/SPDIF converter in between DAC and my music server. From this post I think I have an answer for my question already. 
Can anyone recommend a good USB-SPDIF converter? I'm thinking of buying Weiss INT204 but it doesn't have an optical output only aes/ebu and coax. :-(
