What is art?

Art is personal and means different things to each of us. I get that. Placing value on art is something I cannot comprehend. Some of us want a stereo that looks as big as it sounds. Some want a sleeper system that can do the unexpected. We get chastised for spending large sums of money on a speaker or amp or other component but it is worth it to us for the pleasure it brings.

This, however completely baffles me.

I wonder if it comes with a roll of tape.

...easy come, easy go. At least there is nutritional value to the piece. If I tape a banana to my wall at home, I wonder if I'll then get the joke, or perhaps not, because it's just a reproduction.

Haaa! Sorry it took over to the new year to respond... was kind of stuck to the wall with duct tape!
Yeah, came across this, didn't really know what to make of it. A few mates here with very high intellect passed on some comments then I added my 50cts worth:

1. What a bizarre load of bollocks!!!

2. If the banana was unripe and very very green then it makes perfect sense to use duct tape, simply because you really don't and can't peel an unripe banana, plus it tastes bloody awfull. So let's tape that sucker. To the wall I guess...

3. If the banana was over ripe or at the point of being perfectly ripe, which should be bright yellow more or less with this particular type (the chiquita banana, however you spell it...) then using duct tape is fine! Simply because I don't want anyone else to eat it! Putting a padlock on it would certainly squash it or any other way, so duct tape is great! Good job, well done mate.

4. Still if unsure, and the potential buyer is going to pay a massive lump sum of $$$ (absolutely nothing better to do with their money) then I reckon best advice, refer point 1!

Other than that, the tooons are fine!

I lived in the Art World for quite some time. It is unfortunate that these Fringe, Pseudo, non talented characters dilute the atmosphere. It demeans the people who are talented...I would suggest in this case Performance Art, in which someone is stuffing the banana into the "so called artists" mouth without his permission! Now that would be a creative message!!

Yes agreed mate. Still very bizarre and definitely dilutes those true works of Art, without a doubt!
I really don't have the depth required to understand fine art... but I do have 50cts worth of knowing what's good or let's say, genius work vs something totally nuts like this. A banana stuck to the wall with duct tape...??? Must be SOTA!
I'll be damned.

Hopefully, based on whatever is going on behind this mindset, it probably makes certain sense to those with very in-depth knowledge, I don't know.
Cheers, RJ

The same with me ...

However, two months ago I offered a banana with a roll of duct tape with the proper instructions printed in a sheet to a good friend for his birthday, so I now felt compelled to answer.

I appreciate fine modern art - my stereo has to coexist with my paintings. IMO we must consider the banana together with the provocative conceptual works of Maurizio Cattelan. I have admired them for long and only regret that his fabulous work does not have the recognition of the banana - the media power is sometimes destructive for art.

It is hard for me to select just a couple of his works - I suggest googling Maurizio Cattelan name looking for images and reading the full story of the banana work, ignoring the "Some one just paid 6.2 ..."

And yes, if I had to choose between a dCS Varese and a Mark Rothko to keep for life I would pick the Mark Rothko after late 1940's - sorry high-end fellows. ... ;)

Looks like something a second grader would do as part of his presentation.

Should have used a plastic one the kid probably would have. So who's going to take a plate of spaghetti with red sauce, take a piece of painted sheetrock painted white and through the spaghetti on it? let it get nice and moldy for a bit more color and pop it in a frame and auction it off?

I got another one. An empty garbage pail with McDonald's wrappers on the floor around it.

Rob :)

People have a tendency to over think/interpret, whether it's 2d, or 3d. I recently finished a heavy steel piece (250 lbs). At times it has an African Feel for me and at other times Aboriginal. Talk about Extremes! Any piece that is thought provoking accomplishes a motive. Alberto Giacometti encapsulates this: "Seeing, understanding the world, feeling it intensely and expanding our capacity for exploration to the maximum"

I'll 2nd the Rothko!!

That‘s what I call art. Thought provoking, invokes emotion, creates a memory. Right?
The scratch on the right fender or the beautiful dog?

Both architecture & art have been in decline since the Renaissance ended...just saying.
As a kid my exposure to art were the velvet paintings of Elvis being sold on the side of the road, and those paintings of dogs playing pool. Then I visited the Louvre. And I visited it again and again. I got to see a Rembrandt in a castle in the Czech Republic. Those are good memories. And yes, I try to hit art museums in various cites. But my spending priority is audio. Ars gratia Artis.
