What is art?

We tried to expose our kids to art and culture. All 3 are musicians, 1 engineer, one teaching English in Japan, and our daughter is an artist and a writer. One mans garbage is another mans gold. Rag and Bone.

Maaate! The last time I did that at home after some minor tiff with the Mrs... I got a thunderous slap!
Wifey's got a good back hand. I reckon Novak Dj could learn from her swing.
That deserves a mighty WOOF!

Sorry.

Art is personal and means different things to each of us. I get that. Placing value on art is something I cannot comprehend. Some of us want a stereo that looks as big as it sounds. Some want a sleeper system that can do the unexpected. We get chastised for spending large sums of money on a speaker or amp or other component but it is worth it to us for the pleasure it brings.

This, however completely baffles me.

I wonder if it comes with a roll of tape.
Tony, it’s like porn. I can’t give you a definitive answer, but I know it when I see it.

As for the banana duct-taped to the wall, that was performance art, intended to drive engagement. For the answer, research the gentleman who purchased the art for an exorbitant sum, and correlate how he used that purchase to drive engagement.

I recognize that my high-end expenditure surpasses my art expenditure.
An economically stupid choice. The art valuated significantly, the high-end devaluated

Porn denigrates and tears down. Art is beauty and uplifting.

Agreed, porn is actually a societal scourge at this point. My only meaning was this, I can’t always tell you what’s art, and I can’t always define what is porn, in the abstract. But I know it when I see it.

I think I get what you’re saying. Some of the ancient frescoes around Italy like in Pompeii. The ancient Romans seemed to have a fascination for Eros art. And Pompeii is a very somber place.

The chappy who bought this work of so called art... B-with tape, obviously didn't know what to do with his money!!! Damn! If only I had the chance of contacting him bit earlier, I would've certainly helped him to spend his useless $$$ in a far more meaningful way... leading towards highend audio that is! What a shame what a shame... a great chance missed and what an absolute banana!

No thanks, don't really want to engage with this particular banana. Good for him and great to know he spent an absolute waste of a fortune on that thing... just ridiculous.
At this stage, I really do wonder what type of audio system he owns... if at all. Oh dear, must be a peanut with some ear muffs on the ends... and most probably duct taped to the wall?
Hee haw!

To the question what is ART? for some art is expression, emotion, creativity, perspective, communication, beauty, storytelling, and meaning.

For others, it’s great opportunity to launder money,

Very true. Art is the ultimate expression of marketing, and so, it is an excellent indication of where the market is.
Van Gogh is infamous and obvious example of a man who failed at marketing, I guess, than? Of course, I can name many others. So, the (rhetorical) question is does the 'marketing' creates art or art has an immanent value?

Art as in investing, it pays to be 15 minutes ahead of your time— not 15 years.

Funny, but terrifying thought. Imagine living in the world where everything is a commodity

Klaus Schwab talks all about that kind of world in his book "The Great Reset" where "you will own nothing and be happy" according to Klaus... lol
