The audio journey is certainly a twisting road. Just a few years ago, I believed that the combination of my Wilson speakers and the wonderful Tenor electronics would be my end game. However, my introduction to Zellaton quickly changed that belief.

Gideon Schwartz of Audio Arts had been a longtime proponent of mating Zellaton with fast, extended and high bandwidth amps such as DarTZeel and Goldmund, which seemed to bring out the best in the Zellaton Statements. With this pairing, I believed that I had reached the pinnacle. Yet a phone call last month from Gideon changed that. He asked me to audition the recently released Soulution 326 preamp and 312 stereo amp in my system. Myles Astor recently converted to Solution and was kind enough to loan me his personal components (thanks Myles!). These entry level diminutive components seemed even smaller when compared to my massive Goldmund and Tenor electronics. Yet looks can, and in this case, were deceiving. That day, Gideon and I listened in a darkened room for almost five hours. We both emerged mesmerized, stunned, and emotionally drained from this intense musical experience. The Soulution 300 series components clearly outperformed the mighty and much more expensive Goldmunds, DarTZeel and Tenor by every measure. Not even close.

I was fortunate to have an extended multi-week audition of the Soulutions. Sometimes I struggle to dissect subtleties between components. In this case the differences and improvements were so obvious and mesmerizing in every respect. Needless to say, I boxed up the aforementioned gear for the new Soulution 727 preamp and the yet to be released Soulution 717 monoblocks (I think may be getting the first set in the country thanks to Gideon expediting) A few days ago, the 727 preamp was delivered along with a Soulution 511 stereo amp as a loaner. After three days of break-in, I want to share my initial observations.

To my humble ears, the Soulutions are not an incremental improvement, it is not subtle - it is overwhelming. There is an utter transparency and purity that I am at a loss for words to accurately describe. They provide a window into the musical event that is utterly captivating, involving, and deeply emotional.

New details emerged from familiar music. Such resolution and detail can be the antithesis of beauty and emotion. That is why throughout ninety percent of my audio life, I have had tubes somewhere in the electronics chain. For me, tubes brought out the color, the passion, and the reality of the musical event. However, the Soulutions deliver a beauty, and richness that will thrill even the most ardent tube aficionado.

The first stunning initial observation is the impact, and definition of the low-end. It is not a bottom-up voicing, nor a heavy dark weighting. This is a deep bottom-end with detail, power, and authority, exceeding by a large margin anything that I've ever heard previously.

The soundstage is wide and deep – the best in my experience. Excuse the play on words, but the Soulution components “amplify” every characteristic that makes the Zellaton speakers so special. Gideon will be returning to retune my Schnerzinger protectors and will install a full loom of my new Schnerzinger wiring as well. Even changing out just the speaker wire to Schnerzinger brought about changes warranting a separate treatise but that’ll come later and besides, looks like Steve W is doing the honors on that subject!

To say that I'm blown away is an understatement. As my journey continues, I will post updates, and certainly welcome members to my home to experience what I do.

Wow - incredible system and room. Congrats!

Hi mike

It seems you and I have known each other for a good many years and I have always enjoyed reading about your system changes. I must admit that mine is a very. mature system but one that I love very much. Having said that Im simply amazed at how the EMI Protector and the Grid Protector by Schnerzinger has changed my system. What I also must say is that having heard Zellaton on a few occasions, it is the one speaker that has truly caught my attention. It truly raises goosebumps whenever I hear them playing. I read with interest you amplifier choice as well as taking note for the reason why. Im married to my tube system and Lamm is an integral part of my journey which I could never imagine myself parting with. Ive done a lot of research on the issue and find that my Lamm ML3's would drive the speaker. due to the material used in the production of the drivers. Gideon has also used Jadis and driven the speaker with aplomb. So as I sit and wonder I have to admit that "I never say never" ;)

The audio search is a long winding road but I too have found a home in my pair of Zellaton Evo Plurals after many years and incarnations, thanks to our common music maven guide, Gideon Schwartz of Audio Arts. I have now had my Zells - paired with Goldmund Telos 590 integrated -for several years - time has flown - and every listening session has brought treats and new musical explorations. The combination brings to my ears an inviting sound that draws you in right away to the musical action with its flow, dynamics, resolution (human touched!) and tonality. Now we have Soulution and Mike and Miles' cool revealing reports...Let's see what the future brings here as I am listening up to everyone taking this new plunge with Soulution and the Zells. I ask jokingly: Why does our mentor and friend Gideon always have to be on musical target - can't he just leave us music lovers alone in our listening rooms joyfully picking up another LP to play on our systems?

Mike, thanks for sharing your progress; our last listening session was really moving and I’m still feeling it, months later. Mike’s 717 monoblocks are being built now and once in, we’ll be planning an event for WBF members to share in the Soulution-ZELLATON-Schnerzinger joy.

I've had my Soulution 727 preamp for about two months now, having owned the 725 for several years. As disenchanted as I was with the big Solution monobloc amps, I am absolutely thrilled and delighted with the 727 preamp. If you want to hear your system as truthfully as possible, the 727 will tell you in no uncertain terms. But be careful what you wish for...it is that revealing. But it's quite an extraordinary instrument for music reproduction. Wonderful indeed.

What amps are you using the 727 with Marty .?

I have had my Soulution 727 now for two months… right out of the crate it has been amazing … no single piece of audio gear has ever had such a positive impact on my system , to my liking , as has the 727 . The life it brings to well recorded media has been startling . After several hundred hours now , it has raised the level of performance of anything in its signal path to its fullest potential . This is a special piece !

Congrats, Marty! Great to hear!

Do you have your 717's yet?
I have no intention of buying those. I had horrible reliability issues with their previous 701 monoblocs as well as poor service for their repairs. Love the 727 preamp but will stick with the bullet-proof Gryphon Mephistos. However, no doubt the 717 is a fine sounding amplifier. Just not for me.

apologies. I meant, Mike (vinyl_mike).
Last that I heard was December. However, Gideon and Michael Trei are coming tomorrow to install the Allocator, and a Fuuga Cartridge. Hope to get an update on the 717s delivery.

I am back around to offer my first impressions of the partnership between my pair of Zellaton Plural Evo loudspeakers and my new Soulution 331 integrated amplifier ("331"). Following the advice of music maven and mentor, Gideon Schwartz of Audioarts Inc., I switched out my Goldmund Telos 590 SEII integrated amplifier ("Goldmund 590") (which drove the Zells to fine musical results for the past few years) in favor of the new Soulution 331.

I was not prepared for the musical revolution the sleek and diminutive 331 has brought to my listening room. It is sometimes hard to describe its stunning new window into the music and the pleasures it brings in my listening room.

The reproduction of stage and recording venue (on great recordings that afford these qualities) with the 331 and Zellaton is unique in my experience. Performers appear on stage just as may be described in a recording's linear notes and photos of the event - including a layered depth back to the rear walls if the recording allows. Performers are placed in a stable relationship to each other in sharp natural outline and dimension, each in a pocket of air as in live performance if the recording provides. With the 331, performer chemistry and group artistry are tactilely present and naturally alive.. Most critically - and certainly unique to my ears with the 331 in place-- the music does not push itself artificially outwards towards the listener. Rather, the sound naturally evolves, flows and gathers on the stage and immerses the listener completely in its drama - much like in a memorable live performance. This is a new perspective on recorded music getting ever closer to the live experience - a thrill to hear.

The Soulution 331 is a fast moving dynamo of an amplifier - never is there a contraction of dynamics or in musical flow. Notes begin and end naturally with near-perfect timing. Timbre, tone and harmonic richness are captured, to my ears, naturally swinging, free and liquid - even given the 331's quality for exceptional speed and inner detail resolution. This combination of speed, resolution and liquidity of tone and textures is quite a feat.

The Zelleton Plural Evo tweeter unit, a masterpiece, is even more open, sweet and coherent driven by the 331. There is never a hint of glare or hardness on favorite recordings to the very top of a whispering violin's register or in the sparkle of Aoife O'Donovan's expressive high vocals, (such as when she joins her early-career band, "Crooked Still" on their terrific propulsive "Shaken By A Low Sound" album.) There is never a feeling that there will be strain or grain or breakup on top. (With the Goldmund Telos 590, I would find I would frequently move the volume control higher to obtain more musical detail and engagement. With its dynamic punch and resolute speed, the 331 at low volume is musically rich and rewarding and its volume control is finely calibrated for every step of accurate volume control).

The natural flow and beauty of the Plural Evo midrange is even more inviting and immersive with the 331. The thinness at high volume sometimes rearing its head on favorite recordings with the Goldmund 590 is gone. Amazing separation of each orchestra section is effortless on great recordings with the 331 - the timbre difference between violas and cellos in midrange flights are readily apparent in their layered sections.

Bass is a new creature in my room now too. The Goldmund 590 surely had bass impact and coherency in my room but not like this: the 331 brings a new exploration of bass quality to its bass quantity. Close your eyes and witness bassist Christian McBride's fingers working over the body of his resonant instrument in his airy correct position on stage, each string perfectly distinct and pungent. Ditto for the thunderous bass of the late great bassist Phil Lesh powering the Grateful Dead forward with purpose in bass lines that feather and pulse alongside Garcia's shining guitar- as at the Dead's powerful Nassau Veterans Coliseum 9/8/73 show taken from the "Dave's Picks- vol. 38" collection. This quality of fine and pungent bass detail- coherent and flowing - informs as to how an acoustic or electric bass is played in a recording's particular setting and how the engineer recorded the event with microphone placement. The 331 offers total immersion into all aspects of the musical performance.

More to come as I spend time in the companionship of this immersive musical partnership between Zellaton and Soulution. Both of these products are profoundly musical and are reference designs in my view. Gratitude goes out to the engineers and teams of workers at these companies who designed and built these machines to get us closer to the music we love. And of course, as always, kudos to Gideon Schwartz for all he does for our joy of the music!

When we talk about reliability issues about any gear, can we please specify what that exactly means? I have never heard reliability problems about Soulution. It needs to be carefully quantified with solid evidence. It's really not fair to the manufacturer. I have no affiliation with them by the way. Thanks!

Momentum is the real issue with Soulution right now … Time is a problem in high-end audio … as I am also waiting on 717 amps … Soulution released to the press in May and several publications had a few paragraphs on the specs. The 727 has been transformative in my system and I have prepared myself for the 717s … of course never send the meal before its time … nothing worse than a few bad words , as they can destroy the accolades of many ! So I wait !
Anyway , I am told to be patient and the wait will be worth it ! That the amps have exceeded the makers expectations and then some … and that is from the horses mouth . Of course the manufacturer is going to pine the praises of their own product , but when you meet someone quite unexpectedly and spend a few hours discussing the many things new acquaintances discuss before the conversation turns to audio , you find yourself talking to someone in a more revealing place. Enthusiasm feels different when someone is in your presence , you get a real opportunity to read between the lines .
We discussed the revelation that spurs creativity … the inspiration to build something brand new . How it unfolds in your mind , how it sounds in the infancy of thought … kinda like Beethoven writing the 9th … you know you have a sound you anticipate and of course hope to create . And , as I can only imagine in this finicky World of HighEnd manufacturing , hope to create a sound that will infect others in a positive way … like the 727 has ! And, As we all know , this is a very finicky pallet the sound taste of high end buyers , everyone is a Michelin Chef on these sites !
So anyway , long rant right , to the point … I got to ask Cyril Hammer that question … When you first heard the prototype was it , “ well still needs work “ , “ ah , just what I thought “ OR “ I cant believe what I am hearing , blown away “ … so as I waited for Cyril to form the answer , I attentively watched as his posture changed to that stance of confidence , his eyes glared with truth , his face beamed , that glow of knowing something , like a secret to unleash to the World , that you cant wait to tell everyone !
I got the feeling that I was hearing the Gospel from the holy man of audio himself … His proclamation in this moment would be pure truth , no splicing the subjective with bits and pieces of finely chosen words … protecting the freshly new painted shine of hope with the unwanted disappointment of reality !

So , Cyril Hammer and I , shooting the shit about all stuff , until I was silenced by his appraisal of the 717s … the grin on his face … “ they are incredible “ … “ We were blown away by the performance of these amps “ … “ what changes we have implemented have brought the performance to new heights , not only for Soulution , but we believe for all amps “ … he laughed and said … “ that good “ ! “ We couldnt be more satisfied ! “

I was in my living room with the maker himself , as fate would find me … Soulution needed a place to send a package to the area where I live , and the distributor and Cyril Hammer would arrive to pick it up later in the week ! Talk about shit luck !

So , We got into the 701s/711s and where they tried to improve , and how they made changes , and were they had to work tirelessly on certain changes to preserve the house sound , but reach that goal of technical improvement and of course most important , the goal of overall improved musical truth ! We talked other manufacturers, and the relationships you develop , especially in a secluded place like Switzerland . You get to know your neighbors , your competitors are your friends , you collaborate on projects together … CH Precision and Soulution , Nagra … Dart Zeel … all from the same engineering pedigree … all sharing bit of that Swiss sound !

Of course we all know too , that Swiss sound comes with a Swiss price tag … But who talks price over performance on this site … were all hoping that Cyril Hammer speaks our truth , that they have truly discovered something we can all praise … and of course hear , and hopefully purchase sometime soon !

Hey Mike … Wow … What a great description the Soulution gear has had on your level of enjoyment … your words are perfect … I can feel the impact from my house !

Its refreshing to read about the revelation , conveyed by music , and the feeling it has had on someone ! How the changing of components or adding a new component has effected someone emotionally , versus the description of the gear … its dark , its thin , its grey , its slow , its fast , its … which is all important … but how does it make you feel about listening to your system … thats what I want know … LOL … so thanks for the enthusiasm I feel from the revelation Soulution has had on your system and clearly has had on you !
