Is High End Audio Gear Worth the Money?

was in Death Valley a month ago, and went about 25 miles through the wash and debris fan and up one of the canyons in the Jeep. lots of crazy sand deposits one must avoid unless you want a huge expense to get extracted. i don't yet have a winch but not sure there would be anything to hook onto there anyway. i do respect mother nature and limits of tech and realize i have a big learning curve.
One can bury a tyre/rim with the rope/cable on it.

Better is to travel with a group.

thanks. i'm on the Jeep forums asking lots of questions. and staying safe.
OK 10 litres of water and a sleeping bag would be good to have as well.

Some kettle to boil water for tea is also worth having.
It is easier to solve a problem, with taking the time to have a cup of tea while thinking about things.

had to be an awesome trip.
Did a 3-week family trip in the summer of 2014 when it was still quiet. My wife doesn't like the cold, so she went to India for some yoga and I went to Iceland for 8 days in heavy snow, concerts at Karpa with the Iceland Philharmonic at either end (a fine orchestra in one of the world's best concert halls) and whizzing around in a camper van for the other 6 days.

It was -12c in the van at night. I had dinner with a friend one evening and he insisted I stay with a friend of his who has a guest house. That was a very sensible idea.

The problem in Iceland is the wind. The doors of the van had rubber hinges, otherwise they've have got ripped off.

you are nuts in a good way.:)

i did go last year to Homer Alaska in early February to take pictures of Eagles and it was close to zero degrees out on the water while taking the pictures. we traveled in a boat to the other side of this bay to take the pictures and it was +10 to -10 Fahrenheit. and then the wind blew and it got very cold. the bears were sleeping, but plenty of moose around. and frozen waterfalls everywhere.

You don't seem to get what a high end product is. High End is not DIY. High end is not poorly finished. High end is not a plain ugly box. High End is not something called ____t.

Hello

As a DIY speaker builder I didn't want to let this go. Not all DIY is poorly finished in an ugly box. More importantly you can clone systems for much less than their purchase price providing you have access to the drivers and schematic. An example is the JBL M2. I am not going to get into if the M2 is high end or not it's a moot point.

WRT to the thread like anything else some are some not. I don't see any bargains like there are in lower coast products. Seems to me part of the mystique is the price which should make anyone wary.

Rob :)

Would you tell someone about to buy a million dollar sports car to be wary? How about a watch that costs $100k?

Those are different products for sure; but the mentality is the same. These are high end speciality products intended for high end specialty applications. The underlying theme seems to keep going back to rich people are gullible and spend money foolishly. I haven't seen evidence to support that. Now, I have seen people who want a shortcut or a cheap way to get what mimics the real thing spend monies unwisely.

Is someone going to drive a million dollar sports car on a dirt road? I sure hope not.
Is a high end stereo system going to sit in a small living room in front of the picture window and barcalounger? I sure hope not.
Is someone going to wear their $100k watch in a racketball match or to work on their expensive car? Not me.

Why are high priced cars cool but high priced stereo gear seemingly a rip off?

How can something be a high end item if it’s only built for you?

I was defending that all DIY looks like crap which is what you implied. Also pointing out there can be good value in it.

Didn't make the argument it was a High End product.

How about a custom installation using a dealer driven selection built for that persons, room, preferences and budget that's built only for them.

Using your outlook customization of a system to meet a clients needs is not high end?

Who would of thought?

Rob :)

Or how can't it be high end if it is only built just for one person? ;)

I respect the DIY community - I have built and modified gear, but accept that builder bias expectation and limited perspective make it a separate domain.

Surely I am not questioning the DIY value for money.

I’m a bit more Frugal than most , invested heavily into a mahogany sundial for a mere 109 bits ….!

Bespoke footwear is very "high end", custom tailored suits, etc. Why not bespoke audio?

That’s not the sane thing as DIY

No Rob you are twisting it. DIY is not dealer customization or even manufacturer customs it’s a very different thing
I can’t tell you about great looking DIY since I’ve never seen it .
