A parents worst nightmare, a horrific day indeed

I'm a lurker, and this is only my 2nd post. My $0.02 is that WBF needs to make a clearer line in this regards. It claims the off-topic forum is 'anything goes' and discussions ranging from 'politics to the environment to whatever' are allowed. There is no way this topic can be discussed apolitically or without broaching gun contol IMO.

What is it? Does 'anything go'? Politics or not? A moderated political sub-forum? I'm hesitant to participate further and invest the time to articulate my views only to see the discussion moderated and closed.

In certain controversial topics I have allowed them in the past only to have the thread quickly devolve.

Even though I agree with you Dave and everyone else here about gun control this is just not a topic for such a forum as ours. I made the attempt to immediately close the thread until I had several ask for it to be reopened so that thoughts and prayers could be added. I did such along with my own request that gun control not be a topic as I promised the thread would be closed. Simple request guys. I have had several, yourself included either post or send me a PM outlining that the thread is incomplete unless gun control can be discussed.

Sorry Dave, I feel the same as all of you as I am a proponent but I again feel strongly that this topic be avoided

There was a time shortly after WBF was launched I had several members request I add a dedicated forum here at WBF on guns, firearms and munitions. I solicited members at that time regarding their thoughts and their was a huge outcry that if such a forum was started they would vacate their memberships here at WBF

We have all seen images of grief from this tragedy, and I thought the following in today's NY Times was especially touching and relevant to our main passion

I read today on one of the web news pages that the well known actor Morgan Freeman has a theory about these shootings. Essentially, what he is saying is that the perpetrator's are seeking notoriety and that the media is fueling these tragic events by giving them what they desire.
His theory is that these criminals are basically loners and losers, by seeing all of the extreme exposure that the media gives to the names and descriptions of these crazy people, the more it is fueling their desire to commit a heinous crime and therefore to be recognized. Morgan states that it would be FAR better IF no publicity whatsoever was given to the perpetrator. This theory would seem to make sense to me.

It would be difficult to keep such a story out of the news

Sorry, my friend, but as much as I admire Morgan Freeman artistically...he is full of ****.

The concluding line in his actual statement is dead wrong and absurd.

It IS about.......

Read the article. Complete load of rubbish. For starters, media coverage is a given. So constructive thinking about how to reduce the number of mass shootings should consider media coverage a constraint, not a variable. You can eradicate traffic deaths overnight by banning traffic. Not gonna happen. Think seatbelts, airbags and DUI laws instead.

Of course, the gun lobby is all over this because it supports their guns are not the problem message. Thanks for nothing mr. Freeman. Go back to making movies, and give up your amateur psychologist career.

Steve, I don't think Mr. Freeman is suggesting that the media could keep such a story out of the news, instead I think he is saying don't publicize the name of the perpetrator.
Guys,I totally agree that it IS about.... no question whatsoever there from me.... BUT i suspect that there might still be a modicum of truth about what he says, in combination that is.

More to this story needs to and will come out. I want to know why the mother of the shooter felt the need to quit her job to stay home with her troubled son and yet somehow thought it was a good idea to have lots of guns around her house. If she kept such a close eye on him as some have said, didn't she notice he bought a kevlar suit? Based on what we know so far about the shooter (precious little), nothing makes sense. I hope from now on when the press and/or authorites report on some new *facts* they will indeed be facts. So much of what was originally reported was incorrect including the identity of the shooter. The poor brother was led off in handcuffs by the cops and he was in another state and worked all day and claimed he hadn't talked to his brother in two years.

Guys, I hears your anguish. I read the news as well but honestly a debate on gun control isn't going to happen here

I would instead suggest people debate the value of lockdowns, vs. say evacuations... are people sitting ducks in a lockdown...

Once a lockdown is breached, it's time to evacuate.
