My humble 2CH room!

You can still adjust VTA up with shims. But from your description of the sound that will not help. If you already have some shims in there you could take some out to lower the back of the arm.

In the short term a warmer cart should work but in the long term I would look at upgrading your preamp/phono stage. From the one small review I could find of your PS Audio 4.6 they described the sound as having good tension but being a bit too forward and brash.

Yes, I agree. If I could find a nice tubed preamp (with phono) then that may solve my problem as well. Problem is I can't do both and the preamp would cost considerably more I think.

With your love for rock, I would not recommend the Grados. Best recommendation from me for your system is the Sound-Smith modified 103 Ruby OC nude. Since your arm does not have VTA adjustability don't buy line contour cartridges as those all require careful VTA set-up.

I had a Grado Ref Platinum which sounded very nice on the NA Horizon. I will check into the Sound-smith cartridge. Is that a special order item?

Hello John!

There are several aftermarket devises to add VTA adjustment to the RB tone arm.

I agree with Gary as for the Grado, you may want to inquire also on the Dyna DV 10X5.

As far as acoustic treatment you should favour diffusion over absorption to get that great soundstage!

It's not a special order but if not in stock, it may take time for Peter yo build one.

I have heavy blackout curtains covering the back wall behind my couch, so could I use diffusion on the side walls?

OK. I will check it out. I hear Peter takes his time though.....good thing I'm a patient person!

Behind speaker and break the first reflection spot on the side wall.

Thank you for that. Do you have any Canadian supplier lists for these?

If you use diffusion behind the speaker at all, make sure it doesn't absorb and doesn't have a characteristic sound.

Stored in my memory bank!:)

Check with Bernard Lee of Charisma.
He distribute a line of Spanish made devise.
He could point you toward a retailer.

I will do that. Thanks !:)

It's been awhile since I last posted here, and I'm happy to say that I have finally ordered and will be receiving 6 acoustic panels on Monday. (2'x4'x3"). I was able to get them locally and they appear to be well-made. I'll post some pics and give my impression as to sound quality enhancements very soon.

Good to hear about you getting acoustic panels. Moving to the larger room I'm sure helped. A bit of acoustic treatment (not too much) will help tremendously too.

Did you ever fix the strident sound? I ask because I installed an Ortofon 2M Black and it has been running in continuously for a week already. It's a FABULOUS cartridge for that price ($800) with the Genesis speakers. Lots of detail, sweet, sweet highs. I think one of those cartridge that punches well above it's price/weight. The high output also contributes to better dynamics and lower noise particularly for cheaper phono stages (I'm not using the Burmester Ph100 with it).

However, VTA/SRA is very, very critical. Much more than I'm usually used to even with my OCL/Ruby/Magic Diamond. I'm still working on getting SRA right. Even with a stylus microscope, this time getting it precisely to 92 deg didn't seem to be correct

My plan is to deal with the first/second reflection points and also place two of them on the ceiling. Later on I might (and I mean might) look into bass traps, but I'm honestly not sure they are needed. Anyway, I'll cross that bridge after this first phase is dealt with.

I couldn't agree more with you on how you described the sound and also it's performance value. It truly is a wonderful cartridge. And yes, I think I have overcome what I thought was stridency. I stopped using the Pro-ject Record Weight and changed my mat to a thinner one. I can't remember now if my curtains (behind the couch) were up at the time or not, but they are now and I also placed a very small decorative persian rug on my coffeetable. Everything now just seems to blend much better without having lost any of the attributes of the Ortofon.

Once the panels are up I'll redo my TT setup as I want to make sure it's as accurate as I can get it.

It Looks like Johnny Vinyl has hit a bit of a good streak here. A small version of The Triple Crown perhaps. :)

First I came across a UK Harvest second press (3A/3B) of Pink Floyd- DSOTM. This is one the Holy Grail pressings and I'm tickled pink!

Secondly, I was finally able to order the 6 Acoustic Panels (2'x4'x3") and they'll be arriving this coming Monday.

And just this morning I bought a Nitty Gritty 2.5Fi RCM. The unit is in excellent condition and comes with the optional smoked acrylic dust cover. It has an Oak finish. Brand new this is going for $925 + 13% tax in Canada, but I paid much less than even half of that. Nice!:D. I've owned a Nitty Gritty before (1.5) and was very happy with it, so this opportunity was a no-brainer for me. Bye,bye Spin-Clean!

John-Congrats. The Nitty Gritty looks brand new.

And to quote our friend Rbbert, now the RCF will cost you 3X the cost of the NG. But don't worry. Records are dead ;)

Hello Myles and good evening to you. Please forgive my ignorance on this one but what is an RCF? LP cleaning fluid perhaps? BTW, congrat's John. Pair that NG up with a Shark and your vinyl will sound better than brand new and just unsealed.

Tom

Thanks guys! The RCM does look brand new, doesn't it? Although I asked all the right questions before buying it, one is always a little anxious until it arrives. The seller has a good track record with all positive feedback.

Hey. I've got one of those Nitty Gritty's too (that model, even) :D
