Who is your favourite female singer?

My Nottingham Horizon SE has been warming up and it's now time to play my all-time favourite record by a female artist:

John

Roberta Gambarini fan here. Magical voice.
I also have a thing for Chan Marshall aka 'Cat Power'
Sarah Vaughan is divine
Also partial to Maria Rita. Why do all female vocals sung in Portuguese sound sexy?

Anyone have anything by BIA?

I like Carol Kidd, R. Lee Jones, Jacyntha, Nathalie Merchant, A. Lennox Fiona Apple, J. Mitchel, Gladys Night .. (The vocalist from Evannecence... who I can't remember her name now). Jennifer Warnes... and some more.

Forgot adding Lori Carson :)

Amy Lee is the vocalist from Evanescence, and yes, she's very good.

There are so many that I like, I have to break them down into categories.

The Jazz Singers: Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Peggy Lee, Tirney Sutton, Christy Baron, Holly Cole

The Rock, Soul, Alternative & Crossover girls: Chrissy Hynde (Pretenders), Sia (Zero Seven and solo), Bjork (Sugarcubes and solo), Fiona Apple, Melody Gardot, Ricki Lee Jones, Joni Mitchell, Shawn Colvin, Sade, Natalie Merchant, Allison Morer (Shelby Lynne's sister and a great singer-songwriter in her own right), Allison Krauss, PJ Harvey, Tracey Thorn (Everything But The Girl), Margo Timmons (Cowboy Junkies), Ani Di Franco, Julianne Regan (All About Eve), Sara McLaughlin, Julia Fordham

The Audiophile wet dreams: Patricia Barber, Diana Krall, Jacintha, Jennifer Warnes, Sara K

The HOT girls that scare me a little: Tori Amos, Liz Phair, Shelby Lynne, Pink, Kelli Dayton (Sneaker Pimps), Fergie

The HOT girls I really have a "thing" for: Harriet Wheeler (the Sundays - and possibly the sexiest voice in alternative music), Heather Nova (check out the cover for "Siren"), Chan Marshall (Cat Power), Joss Stone, Kate Bush, Duffy

The "GREAT" voice, usually horrible material girls: Christina Aguilara, Mariah Carey, Shakira, Lady GaGa

The World Music Sirens: Azam Ali (Vas and solo), Lisa Gerrard (Dead Can Dance), Elizabeth Fraser (Cocteau Twins & This Mortal Coil)

So much music, so little time...

So many great singers.. I have to add Celine Dion...NOT in the league of the great Ella or maybe Streisand, BUT still very listenable.
Very tough to have a favorite with so many great talents.:)

While we're touching on Diva attitudes, I like early Mariah Carey.

Yeah, mentioned her in my reply earlier. Great voice often saddled with sub-standard material for the most part. I was just listening to her "Unplugged" CD however a few minutes ago. It really did give a hint of the talent potential. Great cover of "I'll Be There" on that disc.

Julie London,Astrud Gilberto,Eliane Elias. These three are very soft in their singing. Very sexy voices. Julie I believe has passed away, Asrud I don't know, she sang "Girl from Ipanema", Eliane is young and is recording presently. Also all three of these ladies recordings are of excellent quality.

My playlist would include:

Lizz Wright
Norma Winstone
Ernestine Anderson
Maxine Sullivan
Abbey Lincoln
Shirley Horn
Esperanza Spalding
Etta James
Bettye LaVette
Koko Taylor
