For what it's Worth-Tesla

in the one year since I bought an S as well as a Model 3 Performance, the Tesla app show that my wife and I have saved about $4K in gas. .....and no service calls. The only thing Ive had to do all year was to add windshield cleaner fluid to my wife's car last week
How much did you pay in electricity?

Thats the beauty Brad. My entire house is 100% solar powered and I have a 10.8 KW grid on my roof that produces more than required for my auto needs. Bottom line, I have had 2 Teslas this year and my electricity charge for my house and car has been grand total of ZERO DOLLARS. Thats difficult for anyone to ignore. I have no desire to ever own an ICE again. I would recommend Solar power unequivocally. As stated I have not had an electric bill in my house for the past 5 years, since I installed my solar panels on the roof

When did you hit ROI in Cali? Some simply do not have he sun quantity to make it practical.

I reached ROI after 4 years. So I’ve been completely absent of any electric bills for my house and cars plus I continue to bank surplus electricity So even on sunless days my system has enough reserve to pay for those days

That's really fast and congrats! What is the price per kwh out where you live if you don't mind sharing. When I had one of the many solar panel companies come by my house and quote again recently the ROI was questionable that it would ever be reached during the life of the panels and batteries so I decided against it but our kwh price is ranging between 13c and 17c per kwh in Texas and the price for the system + batteries was more than a fully maxed out Model S so it doesn't make sense for me right now.

First off, I went solar for the simple reason that our electricity provider is the most expensive in the nation topping at $0.65/kwh

I only charge my cars between midnight and 0600 on weekdays and midnight to 200PM on weekend when it is 0.16/kwh

With the tax credit I received I reached full ROI on or just before 4 years and in all the time since Ive gone solar I have never received an electric bill

That’s great to hear, Steve. I’ve been dithering for the past 5 years about going solar. I guess I should follow your lead. I was hoping the technology would improve. I’m guessing the newer panels are more efficient. Did you install the Tesla Powercell batteries as well?

I didn’t. My next step is garage batteries but not Tesla. I’m going to use Sun Power as they did my roof panels and they have a great total house solution

Not enough sun here to justify solar as we could get nothing all winter and most of fall. Otherwise, we would have installed solar years ago.

THE STAETE OF PUBLIC CHARGING

The computer in our 2019 Model 3 required replacing last week. Car is 4yrs/9mo old. 9 months out of warranty.
My wife was left stranded at a grocery store parking lot and I had to pick her up. We used AAA towing, because Tesla Roadside towing (really just a AAA tow truck) would have charged for the tow.

$2700 repair.

Tesla would not offer a goodwill warranty replacement, nor would they offer a goodwill transfer of FSD to a new 2024 Model 3.

XTENDED WARRANTY?

So I an not a fan of Elon Musk. :(
However, this is a fair and informative shootout.
Enjoy.

Take that Tesla!

I’m sticking with Tesla. There is no finer infrastructure. IMO. We also became a 4 Tesla family last week as my daughter bought a new Model Y. We now have a Model S , a model Y, a model 3 and a model 3 Performance. The ICE and days of over $5 per gallon gas prices are for us a thing in the distant past.

I just finished a one month free trial of the Full Self Driving feature and this has changed so much for the better. All you do is put in the address of your destination and sit back. It was a nail biter initially but what an achievement. The car will change lanes, stop at a stop sign and wait for traffic to clear and make right or left turns with ease. Having said that I still don’t have the brass cajones to subscribe to the function but the drive is so much smoother than what it was a year ago. When Al M and Mad Floyd visited last month I gave them a demo drive and they were quite impressed. It’s spooky watching it tell you in 500 yards turn left onto such and such a street and then the signal light goes on and the car moves to the left lane and slows to a stop and once traffic is clear the car makes the left turn as you sit back and watch the steering wheel turn. The car makes all of the turns and stops in front of my house and announces “your destination is on the right and you have arrived.”

Agree completely. I researched thoroughly and originally came to the conclusion, with the requisite number of panels, the system could work here in my area in MN. We had trees trimmed to optimize panel exposure in preparation.

Over the almost 2 years I waited for installation, feedback from others in this area convinced me otherwise and I canceled the whole project at the last minute. Thankfully there was no penalty for doing so.

I’ve had Full Service Driving with my Model S from
the get go, along with unlimited free supercharging. My initial impression of FSD soured me on it. That was 5 years ago. The recent updates are supposed to make it much more useful. The visuals have improved greatly. I see it notices traffic lights and stop signs etc. The improvements are due to using an end-to-end neural network trained on millions of hours of video. But as someone who knows the technology used in deep learning as well as anyone on the planet, I’m wary of it still. More than 30 years ago I published my first book on machine learning and AI, the second chapter of which focused on building autonomous cars with deep learning neural networks. 30 years later, the technology is in the hands of the consumer. It will get much better over time, so I’m a cautious wait-and-see kind of consumer. Eventually I expect as I get older and my reflexes are not as sharp, I’m sure I will use it more often. It will by then have gotten significantly better. I don’t expect to buy another car. My model S will outlive me.

I wouldn't go near it a year ago so 5 years ago was a laugh. Your car's computer unfortunately wont drive the new FSD. If you're into it take a test drive in a new one. My son has lifetime free supercharging as well. I don't need this as everything is made on my roof. My solar daily production has allowed me to charge both my car and my wife's car and still provide sufficient electricity to run my house free of all electric bills so I guess you can say I have lifetime unlimited free charging as well. The FSD is truly as good as it gets. Last year was a ratchety drive. This one is as smooth as hands on
