Was just looking at the past five years - perhaps the weakest best picture winners in the past 20.

Finally seeing Three Billboards tomorrow - which everyone says is a good movie, but not best picture (despite winning Globes and SAG)

.we watched Get Out...I don’t get all the hype

I was going through the list Steve just posted and the first thought that came through my mind was the same. And "perhaps" too because I didn't see them all, yet.

Steve is one who might have seen more than the rest of us, perhaps.
And every year he is very good @ picking many winners.
Just for example he recently picked Gary Oldman from 'Darkest Hour' as best actor in another award show.

Guillermo del Toro is one of my favorite directors, so it's nice to see his film 'The Shape of Water' with many nominations.
And Christopher Nolan is another one; I liked 'Dunkirk', and the artistic design in which it was presented.

It's funny to see 'Get Out' with few nominations but it was a funny, satire, horror, comedic film with a pretty good flow and scenes. I liked it but it's not a masterpiece, it's only a funny film with a good paste, and that paste with the actors in it made it to the list, I guess.

'Blade Runner 2049' had artistic elements that brought it to the list.
It will be interesting to see where it goes in company of 'Dunkirk' and 'The Shape of Water'. ...Sound, visuals, cinematography, music score, ...

It's funny too to see 'Baby Driver' mentioned.

'Coco' for animation.

* I've read that this year they have a new envelope's system.
And the award this year for best picture goes to . . . 'Get Out'. :b

Although my sentimental favorite this year is I Tonya it will fail at the Oscar awards. nonetheless it is definitely a worth seeing as is The Greatest Showman for shear entertainment

Having said that and seeing virtually all of the others, I have to say that we liked The Shape of Water and it did receive 13 nominations this year I just can't see it as winning Best Picture

For me

Best Picture.......Three Billboards

Best Actor..........Gary Oldman

Best Actress......Francis McDormand

Best Supporting Actor...Sam Rockwell

Best Supporting Actress..Allison Janney

Best Director....for me this is a tough one as i see possibilities for 3 directors
Guillermo Del Toro
Christopher Nolan
Martin McDonagh

Best Song This Is Me

I'm with you 100% steve.

Steve,

WRITING (ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY)

Martin McDonagh
"Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri"

Martin McDonagh is under "Writing" right, and not under "Directing"?

P.S. I think you simply accidentally omitted from the "Directing" list?
P.P.S. I just double checked; Martin McDonagh is not on the Directing list.

Expect Daniel Day-Lewis will give Gary Oldman a run for best actor Oscar....

This is the first Oscars to nominate a female cinematographer in its ninety year history.

Rachel Morrison has already won the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Cinematographer, and is also nominated for four other awards for her work on Mudbound.

I thought I had seen almost all of the movies that were going to be nominated. Once again I was wrong.

Forgive my ignorance, but I have never even heard of Phantom Thread or Get Out. Didn't think I'd bother seeing I, Tonya or The Greatest Showman but they are nominated.

I was in a bakery the other day where one of the clerks was going on and on about The Greatest Showman. Kept saying how great the movie was - guess she was right! I thought she just had a thing for Hugh Jackman. :)

Seems the more you think you know, the less you really know.

Great observation.
And for best director this year we have Greta Gerwig - 'Lady Bird'.

Just something interesting I've just read today: http://www.cbc.ca/1.4500594

Oscar nominations serve up redemption for Greta Gerwig and Jordan Peele
"After being snubbed by the Golden Globes, the Lady Bird and Get Out directors come up big."

Greta Gerwig is only the fifth woman ever to be nominated for a directing Oscar.

I thought 3 Billboards was underwhelming. Sorry to be a contrarian.

What a meandering script with no real point or ending. And why was Peter Dinklage even in the movie?

But yeah, Frances McDormand can kick a high school kid in the balls and not suffer any consequence = Oscar baby!

I feel your angst as well.

For me the best movie was I, Tonya.

I liked The Shape of Water but not enough to make it Best Picture. Same with Dunkirk as well as Three Billboards but of all of those Three Billboards rose slightly higher than the others

It was a very weak year and personally I like Margot Robbie as Best Actress but seems Francis McDormand might walk away with the Oscar

Steve, those are my two next movies - we are on MoviePass so thankfully it doesn't really cost us much to see movies anymore.

And you were right - why was an Aussie cast as the chief's wife? I think the director/writer doesn't have a clue about rural America and resorted to 20 year old Tarentino-type humor on race/sexual orientation/dwarfism/dimwits to keep a meandering script going. And the ending was like "say what?."

I agree McDormand and Rockwell were very good and probably deserve the hardware.
