added a 3rd Studer A-820 Mk2 with both 1/4" and 1/2" heads, guides and hubs

50 K for some audio cables is far more unbelievable
You got at least something physical here which actually increases in value
This is part of the reason I am changing my direction on this audio hobby.

Mike, me and Blue58 were superfortunate enough to visit Bill and listen to an assortment of tapes on his refurbed Studer, incl Terry Callier and Duke Ellington.
Paradigm shifting, barrier breaking, dimension jumping, jaw dropping, glass ceiling smashing, were all phrases that came to mind.
It helps that he has in my opinion the greatest pair of spkrs in the UK, and a system to keep up, but the holistic goodness of tape would have shone thru on a lesser system too.

Nice reply Andromeda, but as they say "no enchilada".
My system would be SO much better w tape as a part of it...surely we can agree on that.
Re my judgement call on Bill's horns, the worst spkrs I've ever heard were at two UK demos and one at Munich, and they were *proudly* horns...and I've heard way more sub par ones than superlative ones. So I don't have any agenda re horns, liking and loathing them like a guy w multiple personalities Lol.
No, I rate Bill's horns the best, because after amazing demos of Rockport Antares and Hyperions, Kharma Exquisites, Apogee primo modded Duettas and Divas, and Cessaro Liszts, his horns *absolutely* nail what's best in music reproduction at home significantly better than all these, w no down side, and do some things I've not heard *any* home audio system do.
But I'm way OT now...

Umm, that's what I'm afraid of Lol.
He showed me a delivery that looked like a cross btwn a case of Belgian craft beer cans and the kind of kit US Special Forces carry with them in the dead of night...I know his mods will turn out very special indeed.

I see no more Cessaros just the Klangfilm ;) , ill check your system page.
If they are just as good as the old studers you ll be fine

I have the Ampex 350 that I love for its nostalgic value, and when connected to my head preamp it produces wonderful sound, but it is a playback deck only, and there are many attributes in it that make it fall short of modern standards. Its drive mechanism is primitive next to the more advanced machines. I added a simple electronic tape counter to mine - not having a counter is one of the first things you notice lacking. The second is manual tape lifters. it still does amazingly well for such an old machine (mine has the 1958 date written inside, whether true or not), and it is still running on its antique-looking original motor capacitors. The wire insulation crumbled in spots, but the darn beast keeps moving its tape! :)
like this?
I can get this exact machine if I want to....351-2

Yes, that IS a real eye candy to me. Seems to be in great shape, so if the price was within reason I would pull the trigger.

In terms of its sound you might still prefer some more modern machine, but its simple elegance is hard to beat.

Those Otari hubs must go, however... :)

Amazing audio iconic art. Tape handling is relatively crude.

I owned a really clean example (350-2) and gave it to Dave Dintenfass (early Ampex expert here in Seattle) to go through, but before he finished sold it to Ki Choi for some work on my A-820.

within reason? quantify pls?

Hard to tell, check the Reverb.com for somewhat similar stuff, people are asking for an arm and a leg today for their beaters, so my "within reason" would probably be unrealistic, but I would gladly pay $6-7K for it.

I am ready to hear some laughs... :)
