added a 3rd Studer A-820 Mk2 with both 1/4" and 1/2" heads, guides and hubs

The V10 I like most is Audi R8. It's been my dream car for years.
he is close to perfection, engine, chassis characteristics and design
I'm bmw guy I find it hard to say, but it's the truth.

Did you try upgrading your 810/812 internal boards yet? I just did MTSL courtesy of support from Leif and was quite dramatic.

I haven’t and I guess at this point I won’t since the Technics/Doshi is my main playback deck. Who builds the boards for the 810?

I realize the tape handling is better on the A80 and 820, but I don’t think either produce the same level of playback quality that the Doshi preamp plus FM head does.
But what if one has the A80 with FM heads and Doshi!! ;)

MTSL are the ones I use in my 812.

Sitting collecting dust for more than a year. You people stimulated me to finally put the head block back. Soldered the wire direct from FM head to Doshi.

what will the FM heads do compared to the Studer butterfly heads?
Typical butterfly heads damage the imaging for the sake of better SNR figures, so I try to avoid them if possible. The FM heads have wide guard track, which is good, but... they also, in my opinion, fall short of the Otari MTR heads, that combine the best features of both - they are butterflies with wide guard band.

but Studer has 2 series of heads for the A80; longlife and some softer std......the softer sounds....yes you guessed right...softer too
316 and 317 series if I remember correctly

from 1993...is it even analogue?
wiki says it was recorded at Blues Alley in the US

Most of what you read in the audiophile world is BS .
But not this recording, 2 tapes

masterpiece titles are featured in this new reissue series, each a 15 ips, ¼-inch analog tape copy (IEC equalization) sourced from a copy of the original analog master tape. Transferred real-time, using an ATR-modified Ampex Tape Machine with flux magnetic heads. Custom slipcase cover. The first two titles — Janis Ian's Breaking Silence and Ben Webster's Gentle Ben are releasing before 2016 ends.

A longtime audiophile demonstration disc, Hope will show off your system's dynamic range as well as any album ever released. Hugh Masekela, the outstanding South African trumpeter, assembled a seven-piece group and recorded this great set live at Washington, D.C.'s Blues Alley. The songs stretch over a period of nearly five decades and serve as an informal guided tour of Masekela's life. The songs are honest and bare, and as for the sound — WOW!

Technically I don't know what it does. But sonically I am very glad I changed the head. In my case the clarity is improved over the studer head that I had on before. The frequency response is better more linear and extended. If your Studer butterfly head is better than the one I had, my comment might not be relevant at all. But I would recommend tape people to try it, since the cost of replacing is much less than a new cartridge or some fuse.

For a record, I was never impressed by the sound from Studer A820, ATR 102 and Ballfinger playing thrpugh their own phono. I don't think my tape front is Krall or Ella eithrr. I think it is Adele.

FWIW, my combination of Technics RS-1500, Flux Magnetics head and Doshi EVO tape preamp sounds much better than either my Studer 810 or 812,

This is similar to Myles' right? That was an extremely musical tape set up. Imho that was more emotionally gripping for me than any Studer etc set up that I have been played. I am unable to say if it was a combo of Doshi, FM heads, or what, but what you say links that up nicely.

a little question, why is nobody using an Ampex 351 or a Telefunken M5. this is how the best recordings of classical music have been made. excellent tube head amps are also on board
Ampex 351

Telefunken M 5c
Dont forget studer C 37 studer A 80 and the Studer B62 which was the portable on location version of the Studiomachine the A 80.
All the people shitting on stock studers are also shitting or their own beloved " best of the best/ those were the days of analogue " 50 s 60 s 70 s LPs

the audio boards are 1: 1 interchangeable. the b62 is a mobile reportage version of the a80. the b62 was only built in 1972. c37 from 1961-1970

P.S some Living Stereos made with C37 Studer

Yes, very similar setups. A very enjoyable combination.

You speak with such conviction, so just one question: have you done such a comparison yourself? Please, no "How the records are made" nonsense, just holding a modern tape in your hands, have you played it two ways: trough the internal electronics and then through a good head preamp?

Nobody shitting on stock Studers andro. I think the tone people used commenting on stock vs non-stock and discussion on this thread so far is polite enough non sarcasm no where near the tone many used to comment in Wilson and Magico thread. Also Why would everything from 50s 60s are best of the best. Todays audio is best of the best too imo. Only up to who is listening.

@stellavox and his partner may be eyeing up designing upgraded A810/12/16/20 repro cards as they are doing for the A80R/RC right now. There are some complexities to doing so, but if they can get around them, we'll see much needed improvement on that front.

For someone contemplating such a feat, the main decision would be to whether keep the front panel/CPU calibration capability, because it is, in my view, the main stumbling block on the way to sound quality.

If I were doing it, I would ditch that feature, and just go the normal discrete route.
