Anora

I used to love the good old days when there were only 5 nominees in each category. How the Academy decided to expand to 10 nominees eludes me as IMO it dilutes out the talent. Case in point is this movie Anora which my wife rented and we watched last night as it is nominated for best picture. This IMHO is truly a movie which should never have been made. Forget the $5.99 I don’t in the rental. Rather it’s the 2 hours of my life i’ll
never get back This movie is a slutty version of the much beloved Pretty Woman which I consider a classic and an all time great In fact they even quoted a line from Pretty Woman in the film.

In short order the movie is about sex, drugs, and profanity. Not one scene but every scene. And those 2 hours felt like 5 hours. It was an absolute yawner. There was nothing redeeming and I am posting this to save you readers the pain should you watch it
I have no idea how Mikey Madison won the BAFTA award for her role.

My wife it watching this in bed at the moment.

Of the current crop of pre-Oscars movies, we thought A Complete Unknown was superb. Two weeks ago we had a holocaust double bill, A Real Pain and The Brutalist. The latter was well made but flawed, A Real Pain was exceptionally good and well written. Last Saturday was September 5, a pretty average to poor film. We saw a poor ballet on Friday, a really good show today (Pina Bausch Tanztheater Wuppertal - Vollmond) and yesterday saw Bridget Jones. Saw all these in real cinemas with big screens. Also streamed Gladiator II yesterday, which was rubbish. Bridget Jones was brilliant fun. The only problem was it was filmed in the junior school both my kids went to and Jones' love interest played by Chiwetel Ejiofor was called Mr Wallaker, which is the real name of a much loved history and sports teacher, who doesn't look anything like Chiwetel Ejiofor, but does have a whistle.

For films made in your home town, I get really annoyed by continuity issues, like in Bridget Jones when they walk out of a pub into a street that is a mile away. My wife tells me to chill and enjoy.

We liked it a lot. Yes it’s adult but pretty obvious going in since it’s about a sex worker. It’s a dark comedy for most of the second half which some don’t like vs the rom comish start. If I had a qualm with the film, could have been the ending although it brought back her struggles in life full circle.

Don’t feel it’s a best picture winner because of the subject material though. The Brutalist is a much safer pick just based on that.

Keith Im far from a prude and very much an adult. We'll have to disagree on this one. Im looking forward to seeing the Brutalist . As I posted in a different review much to my amazement as I was filled with negative bias going in but Emilia Perez is so far my pick. Have you seen A Complete Unknown. That era of Bob Dylan likely predates you so it seems to be more liked by my generation. I understand why you liked Anora

No, but I really can’t think of a Netflix film I’ve liked. We plan on renting A Complete Unknown and the Brutalist to wrap things up. A Real Pain was a great indie flick and hope Jesse wins screenplay.

its free to stream. No renting. I'd be interetsed in what you think as I bet you wont like it. Give it a chance. It's like nothing you've ever seen
