After 34 days something changed. The sound of the amplifiers was initially a bit dark and has now become clearer. That's 816 hours if I left them on 24/7, or 550 hours corrected for the fact that I left them on playing music only when I was not asleep.
It reminds me more of the hypex nilai amplifiers that I heard at an audio show last year. I went there mostly for those amps, because I was looking for a class D because of their efficiency. At the show I was disappointed. I though it was maybe because of the speakers they used or something, but I was not convinced. It was at the same time an interesting experience because the level of detail was amazing, but somehow I couldn't really enjoy the sound. Later I read people use terms like "grey" and "flat", and that is indeed kinda how I perceived the hypex nilais.
For context: the atmasphere class D are my first serious amplifiers. I have listened to some others including audio gd master 2h which are class AB amplifiers with a class A bias of 30 watts. They sound amazing but I still wanted class D for the efficiency and light weight, so the search continued.
From the moment I had the atmasphere class D at home I knew I would be happy with them because they sounded really nice. I have read the theory as to why: second and third order harmonic distortion. Maybe that's it but what I hear is just something that's nice and enjoyable. What I hear now after 34 days is that niceness combined with the extreme detail and control of the hypex nilai. According to measurements hypex should be even better, and maybe they are in that regard - it's harder to compare to something I hear months ago in a different room with different speakers.
What strikes me about the atmapashere amps is the depth that I missed so much in the nilai room. It feels as if I can hear tens of meters into the distance.
And again for context: there is still a noise problem in my system that pops up sometimes. I tried changing the polarity of the DAC which didn't help. I'm currently burning in a few different power cables with my fridge, which certainly help with the perceived power behind the sound, and even resolution, as I have connected them already just to get an idea of what that might do. Also an audiophile friend recommended me to try a streamer, as I'm still using my computer (not built for audio) directly connected to the DAC, but I don't want a streamer because computers are easier to use. The search continues in that direction for further improvement.
A comment about speaker cables: I have tried mogami cables of length 20 cm but I was not impressed. Since them I have bought some ramm audio amadeus 5 mk2 (length 1 meter) which are better for being able to locate sounds, ease of listening and perceived power/directness or whatever you may call it. Compared to audioquest rocket 88 I'd say the ramm audio are even more powerful and possibly even better in resolution. Next speaker cable I want to try is townshend because I read some good things about them, including being especially suitable for feedback amplifiers due to their foil construction.
