Burmester 911 mk3

:D

@microstrip
I am not sure where you get the specs on Burmester products and I unfortunately don't have the manuals handy, because I remember that the measurements for the 911 were very good to excellent.. (...) As for Signal to noise ratio anyone familiar with the 911 will tell you they are so silent as to make almost no noise even with high efficiency speakers : you put your ears to the speakers and there is NO noise ... and the rated signal ratio I remember from the 911 (on the earlier version of the manual circa 2003?) was quoted as 108 dB that is very healthy and I am not sure there are many tubes amps with these noise specs ...

Frantz,

Happy to confirm about your SNR findings. Real measurements from a review of the 909:

Rapport S/B à la puissance nominale : (full power)
109 dB lin - 117 dBA (pond)
- Rapport S/B pour 1 W en sortie : (1watt power)
85 dB lin - 93 dBA (pond)

I was wrongly referring to an old review that used non weighted values as weighted :(

But my tube Audio Research REF150 specs are :
HUM & NOISE: Less than 0.1mV RMS – 114dB below rated output (IHF weighted, input shorted)
You have to remember it has low noise JFETs at the input ... ;)

You have to remember it has low noise JFETs at the input ... ;)

So does my ARC VS115 and it has a really good S/N ratio as well (104 dB below rated output).

Hi jtein, I'm also from Malaysia and I would like to get in touch with you. Reason is I'm also interested in the 911. You mentioned it cost RM59k. Is that the final price? I understand that the list price is much higher.

Kind regards,
Thf99

Hi Thf99, great to meet another forummer from Malaysia! I think that's the retail price that the official Burmester distributor in Malaysia quoted me.

Btw, which city are you located?

Hi jtein,
Thanks for your reply. When was the price quoted? Is it from AP?
BTW, I'm from KL

Has anyone Bench tested this Model Yet...?
.

Yes, in my listening room I have a bench behind my listening chair. Sometimes with a glass of vino, I sit on my bench and my Burmester still sounds awesome! ;):b

Has anyone compared the 808 to the audio research ref 40?

No, but I have compared the 808 MK5 to the Concert Fidelity CF-080LX.:)

I remembered reading elsewhere that you preferred the CF. is there a big difference?

Big no. Difference? Yes.

What I mean is both are SOTA in their arena. It comes down to what "sound" you prefer. To me, the Concert Fidelity is more transparent, it allows the other equipment in the system to shine, an it is like a great conductor. The 808 imparts more of it's "personality" onto the system, which can be a good thing in some systems.

Thanks, Jim, for your insight. I'm trying to decide between 808 and the ref 40. Visually, I love the 808 but sound wise, the ref 40 may be better, I suspect.

Hi Thf99, cannot help but certainly know the quality of what you are considering. Good luck. What is the rest of your system?

Excellent point. It always comes down to system synergy. When you get to this level of quality, system matching is most important. If the amp is a Burmester, I would go with the 808 over the Ref. 40. I forgot to mention another factor in me getting the CF 080LX, was the cost.

Hi Jim.

The 808 MK5 is a preamp that the no add nothing in the original signal. The neutrality is at the highest possibile level and Mr. Harry Pearson admitted it and he consider the 808's t his personal reference preamp.

I tested a lot of preamps in my system but the 808 MK5 is an astonishing and reference preamplifier in all aspects. Truly an Audio Sculpture.

I totally agree with you, Jim. It's system synergy. Currently, I'm trying out the ARC Ref 40 and Ref 250 at my home. It's a fantastic combination with frighteningly great sound but they run a little too hot. They really heat up my room. Most likely, my choice will be the 808 as I also plan to get the 911.
