I just spent 5 days in Vienna listening to classical music. My IQ should have gone up several points. I just checked my investments. Apparently, it hasn't had any effect yet
I have seen similar but it ties to all music you have a connection with. The subject.in the article played Violin professionally. A strong tie.
If someone were to not enjoy classical, I doubt they would have the same reaction. Unless their mind was activly working to figure out a way to turn off the music.

thanks Marty. enjoyed your post about Vienna. have fun in Munich.
skimmed the article.
over my 30 years of being a crazy serious audiophile, the most significant occurrence has been my evolution of musical focus. gone from 95% pop/rock, 4% jazz, 1% classical in the mid 90's, to now 80% + classical, 10-15% jazz, and around 5% pop rock. string quartets, quintets, piano trio's, piano solo, piano, cello and violin concerto's, and large orchestral are when i live. i'm drawn to it. still don't know a lick about it (and not compelled to learn....more the opposite....trying to not think about it).....but no matter.
it does make me feel good (there are reasons that is what i listen to).........can't say it helps my brain. but maybe it's not hurting.
I knew nothing but classical music until I was about 45 years old. I was reared on it from my crib days. Opera, symphonic, chamber. I went to music school. Played professionally when I could. I should be one smart SOB! But I’m your average dummy.
Not at all I agree 100% with that.
Classical music irritates the crap out of me and I don't know why because it did not use to. I find it anti-relaxing and makes me feel like I am wasting precious chair time.

I don't listen to music for relaxation. I want music to be exciting, stimulating, forcing me to actively follow its narrative.
In the end music does relax my mind in the sense that in the moments of most concentration I only think about it while listening, rather than the usual things of the day. But I don't listen to it in order to put me in a "relaxed mood". That rarely happens with my active listening style.
Impossible to separate the effect of classical music from the live experience I’d say. The relaxing effect is probably more the life brought by live music.

I guess decompression would be a better word than relaxation lol. I listen to a lot of music while doing yard work also with noise canceling headphones, I also am an active listener.
