Real story of one of our employees who went on this remote island in Brazil for her to look at buying a hotel. We were joking that he would bring back material fit for the movie sequel, Hangover III! :) Again, this is all true story and he was just in my office telling me more about it:

-------

Just got back from 3 weeks on a remote island (jungle) in Brasil with my GF...
* 1st day got food poisoning from eating rancid beef - hurled for 3 days, sick for a week and a half could only hold down water and spoonfuls of rice.
*Was at a bingo game with the islanders, and a fight broke out and a guy at our table whipped out a bowie knife.
* Broke my middle toe and 3 ribs slipping on a trail.
* Cut my feet hiking, and walked through a septic pool river (my feet broke out in huge puss filled blisters and my feet swelled (they are still swollen and still braking out in these nasty blisters).
* Got a little sick from the above.
* Drank some hotel water (if you could call it a hotel) and was later informed it was collected rain water full of mosquito larva etc. --- got super sick with fever, hot and cold flashes for four days.
* Mild concussion after this islander gave me 2 shots of something, literally fell backwards in my chair hit a tile floor.
* Had my galaxy 2 s phone stolen but managed to track the guy down and retrieve it.
*Literally could not sleep for weeks more than a couple hours a night because the hundreds of roosters, and wild dogs would start crowing and barking at 3:AM each morning. So loud I could hear them over my Kindle Fire earbuds!!!
* got lost on the island (no one spoke english) lost for 3 hours.
*went out in the heavy surf, got slammed to the Ocean floor, inhaled two lung fulls of water... crawled to the beach and hurl3ed on the beach as my GF took picture laughing hysterically.
* Woke up with my body covered in welts from very toxic Tiger mosquitos... miserably itchy for 3 days. No island medical help. The wealts were the size of fingernails. Unreal.
* repeatedly had islanders steal our premium booze
Had money taken out of my wallet I'd hidden in my room!
* Was cooked a nice dinner by an islander couple cooked (from our hearts)(although I could only take a couple of bites (still sick)... after the meal I got up and thanked them and they pesented me with a bill from the grocery store for $62.00! ...And THEY ate almost all of it.
* Got sick again and for some reason my right hip (which has never had a problem) "locked up" and it was burning and very painful... took a day for it to go away, so I could just lay in my Tiger mosquito laden room---got eaten alive again!
* Got detained at the airport in Customs, because I did not know my GF packed some booze in my bag... (she went back to visit her parents), and the interview took so long I missed my flight, and had to fork over $640 for another ticket from Cubitina to Sao Paul.
* Got lost in the Sao Paulo airport and almost missed THAT flight back to Chicago!!!
*At the beginning of the flight ( a 27 hour flight to Chicago & then Seattle) my neck galnds swelled up, got hot and cold flashes, a fever and I made about 5 trips to the bathroom to hurl etc. on the plane.
*Because of my ribs, I could not get comfortable in the seat and did not sleep, just sat there in extreme pain not sleeping. With crying babies in front and in back of me!

Today I'm back at work eating Aleve like M&M's & dumping peroxide on my feet!

Never fricking again! It took about 12 years off my life-span. Sort of a cross between Apocolyps Now & Survivor.

I should add that there were no medical services on the island and he received none. Tomorrow is his first visit with a Doctor!!!

What's the name of the place/island? I'm from Brazil, and I am curious now :D

Well if he came to see me with the story above, I would have a field day ordering tests for him. I can already think of a couple of dozen likely things he might have picked up ...

I am with you Keith. I had a friend whose wife got a degree in dermatology. They then moved to Florida to open a practice for her. I asked why there. He said because she thinks it is more exciting. I asked what is exciting about that. He said people come to Florida from South America and bring with them all kinds of skin diseases that are not normally seen in US! And she loved treating new things. What we take for granted in the modern world...

----- Is it in Florida where recently a man was eating the face (skin, flesh, eye, nose, ...) of another man?

Florida sure has a lot of 'new things'. For example; .................

Ilha do Mel is indeed a dump, a haven for hippies ... Not much in the way of tourist infrastructure there.
Brazil is a top 10 economy, with a bottom 10, african infrastructure. Our airports are dumps, and the major cities are some of the most dangerous.
All of this is about to be shown to the world once we host the World Cup (Football, aka Soccer) in 2014 and the Olympics in 2016. It's going to be a disaster of incredible proportions.
So if you're thinking of coming here... Well, just don't :D

Thanks for the honest assessment :). The impression from the outside is always different than the inside.

-----Still, some nice people from Brazil. :b

Used to visit Bella Horizonte regularly for work. It was clean and nice with one of the most beautiful collections of smart young ladies working at our rep's office. Didn't care for their big cities - no different than any bad parts of major US cities.

Although I have never had it as rough, some of my visits to India and early days of Russia were memorable in similar ways.

-----Some of my best friends are the Brazilan women. :b ...Russian & German ones too. :b

Well, your friend signed up for some adventure tourism and that's what he got.

He actually was not a tourist. His girlfriend wanted to buy a hotel there (she is from Brazil).

I can't wait to hear how that works out! LOL
