Golden Gate DAC arrives.

Yep, this Tara pc is very good indeed. Used it with the Trinity dac before I sold the Trinity combo. However, it was not a killer combo in my view with my Kondo M1000 mk i preamp so I guessed it was an ideal match with tube units. Surprised to hear it worked well with the GG dac.

Power cables on GG change sound a lot - well depends. My Kimber K10 palladian does not do much, but Tara Cobalt and Sablon's latest were positive, but this top Tara was out of the world. However I used my Cobalt on the Lampi once on horns Universum and SETs, and it darkened the sound considerably, and the Verictum from Poland worked very well. So you should try the cables you have.

Will do some additional listening to the anniversary 45 valves next weekend. Will also insert the KR 242 tubes in order to find out how they sound with the GG in my LA set up.

Possibly mister Lamipizator himself will visit me on short notice in order to fix my 'hick up'/'stottering' problem while playing my dsd 256 files (most of them are Challenge Classices recordings; the dxd versions of these recordings as well as my dsd 128 files I can play without any problem), optimizing the software in my server/computer (and maybe try out his latest top of the line server) and play around with some different valves as well to get the best result with my Kondo (single ended) amplification..

When he is there, try to get him to adjust the gain so that the 242 works. Your system will jump multiple times. Not sure if he can adjust the gain that way, but ask him.

Btw and just to be sure, did you (also) experience any gain issues with the KR 242 tubes in tube based systems? Or maybe only in systems with solid state amplification?

With both. And it was nothing to do with SS or tubes alone. Bill’s initially had an issue until he got the GG gain adjusted, after which his system performance has gone up multiple notches. So it is a matter of adjusting overall gain.

Guys, a quick question re. gain adjustment for 242 tubes. I assume, that a gain adjusted for 242 will be too low to use with other tubes. Is there a special switch installed to toggle gain between 242 and other tubes?

242, PX4, 101D and 45s work on the same switch. PX25 and 300b work on another switch. We did not see any loss due to that adjustment for other tubes, but the UK Lampi distro is planning to get his adjusted for the special 45s.

So there is no special switch to adjust gain between 242 and other tubes? I thought, the gain difference is quite big. You just adjust the volume level?

Yes, volume needs to be adjusted. And PX25 and 300b work on a different voltage. This can be further optimized. If I decide I like 242 and one other, I can one on either switch

He may not need to. However, in any case, its better to ask BEFORE he leave for the NLs, as he could consult the spec sheet and see what may be lacking, if anything. Since the GG was upgraded in the last 8 months or so, i expect it will work with the 242 (AC should test ASAP, to make sure).

Pretty sure that it should be a breeze for Luk to turn down the output mVs on the GG in a few minutes.

I think its the original R2R GGs with old firmware that had problems. I know thaat mine before upgrade had a 2,500mV output.

No recently mine distorted when I tried in an AR ref 6 plus ref 110 with Sasha 2.

Yup....either on the Vol Control on the Lampi or on your amplifier. All tubes still work, after upgrade for me...

One thing to factor is that I moved from 91db speakers to 94db and that combined with the 242 tube means that my usuable range on the integrated amp dropped by 2 clock "hours" or so.

Thank you, Bonzo and Wisnon. It might be an issue in my system as I often listen at night at very low volume levels. In this case I should probably ask Lukasz to configure the gain at a lowest possible level.

You need to change your preamp :)

Or simply have another valve for late night listening

Fwiw the 242 gives an extra 6db of gain over, say, a PX4. This is a lot of extra gain and sounds much louder! In some systems this will overload the preamp / integrated leading to distortion, hence the need to pad down the gain in the GG by using resistors in the signal path to attenuate output voltage. If going down this path, then choose some good quality resistors of the lowest impedance you can get away with as there are significant differences in sound quality and presentation between them, not unlike capacitors.

When I inserted the anniversary 45 valves in my GG last Sunday my first impression was that these tubes were not less powerful sounding than the Elrog 300b's I was using before. However, after an hour or so I came to the conclusion: I misjudged because the 45's were sounding quite laid back or somewhat 'dull' if you like.

I let the 45 tubes play continiously from last Sunday afternoon so I am nearing 100 hours of playing in. They have (i) opened up, (ii) smoothed out and (iii) sound more powerful again (as in the first listening hour or so).

Of course you get used to a certain sound after a while but I believe I prefer the 45's to the Elrog 300b's in my LA/Kondo set up: the latter are 'pleasant' - or if you want: somewhat 'fat' or 'ripe' - sounding while the 45's are clearly more (i) lineair, (ii) precise and (iii) refined.

Hope the 45 valves will open up somewhat more in the next 100 hours or so.
