I’ve ordered the lot.
The Hildegard of Bingen is a classic Emma Kirkby recording from 1982, done at St Judes, not 5 minutes from me, a church favoured by Rachel Podger and Jared Sacks (Channel Classics).
There’s a super early Mendelssohn from Alina, a force of nature according to my wife, with the wonderful OAE recorded at Henry Wood Hall, engineered by Simon Eadon, a hugely successful partnership.
Hewitt, the most popular pianist over here, did this famous recording at the Christus Kirke Berlin, after having recorded just about everything else by Bach for keyboard.
Hough is a really thoughtful and engaging pianist, last heard him a couple of months ago for Sunday morning Brahms. Engineered again by Simon Eadon, at the Wyastone Hall owned by the Chandos Trust.
The Shostakovich I don’t know but I like the picture, by a favourite artist, Malevich, founder of Suprematism, a Futurist in the 15 year period of post-revolutionary experimentalism before the axe dropped. Another great Futurist was Goncharova, who did many of the costumes for Ballet Russes / Nijinsky. She was also a member of the Blue Rider Group, founded by Kandinsky, which included Sonia Delaunay, another designer for Ballet Russes. How about that? Two women doing men’s work. Anyway, not the first time I’ve bought an album just because I liked the cover.
