I think you're taking a chance on sound quality with almost any new pop/rock release today, whether hires or CD (or even LP, for that matter). Too much engineering, and the goal usually isn't better sound quality it's looking for something that will allow the recording to stand out. Some record labels (all small) and a few artists buck that trend, and their stuff is worth getting in hires if it's offered that way.
