Is Newt Any Different From Past Presidents?

I am open to voting either for moderate republican or democratic candidates interested in solving the issues rather than imposing their ideology. Generally I favor democrat positions on issues such as banking/wall street regulation; including short term higher income taxes on Americans most able to afford it, restructuring entitlement programs and scrutinizing military spending to reduce the federal deficit; stem cell research, and abortion. I generally favor republican positions on issues such as keeping corporate/individual taxes low; reducing the size of federal government and returning more control to state and local government with federal regulation to ensure inter-state commerce or human rights are not violated; and constitutionally requiring the federal government to work within a balanced budget.

I'm afraid this country is being manipulated by the extreme wings of both political parties. And both political party extremes scare the Hell out of me!

Examples include the extreme right wing conservatives opposition to banking/wall street regulations; stem cell research, birth control, full disclosure sex education, and outlawing abortions under almost any circumstances; requiring individuals to be solely responsible for themselves and relying on faith based charities as safety nets; opposing universal health care (though many Americans can't afford health insurance), and promoting individual states health care without federal regulation; ignoring the majority of earth's scientific community regarding global warming long term consequences; excessive military spending and "nation building principles; relying too heavily on an oil based economy; ostracizing gays for their differences with a "that can be cured" mentality; supporting a costly and useless Cuba/American embargo; lack of individual gun control for even the most lethal weapons; and their extreme position on immigration.

Examples of extreme left wing liberals include promoting federal programs to solve all problems including protecting people from themselves and businesses; too many costly/ineffective business regulations; indefinite welfare programs; emphasizing "right-to-work: union control; short term environmental concerns at the expense of business and jobs growth; denial of federal deficit consequences; and opposition to reducing the size of federal government.

Now if I can only find a candidate expressing most of these views and willing to compromise to solve issues for the country as a whole. I'll certainly be listening very closely between now and November. But I'm also going to listen very closely to the congressional candidates in my district for the same kind of input on the issues I care about. It's a shame more voters don't consider using a similar approach.

Actually My-Newt is different. He's already challenging the Fl election results before the Presidential Election!

If i was a us citizen i would go for ron paul .
Be happy you dont have to deal with this dictatorial monster the EU that they have created overhere

We've had the EU over here for a couple of centuries -- a union of states under a single currency/monetary policy. It works reasonably well. I think the problem in Europe, other than the fact that it is new, is that there is still too much cultural/economic autonomy to make it work. Here, the wealthy states subsidize the poor/damaged ones all the time and bail them out occasionally; we barely notice. But we do have those who would put an end to it. Ron Paul is on that list. If Paul were king, for example, New Orleans would have been on its own. I like some of Paul's ideas, from a safe distance. I think he'd be a disaster as a national leader.

Yes but europe consists of autonomous countries since a long time , europe has gone through great pain to make the borders it has now , its just fanatic socialists /christian democrats who imposed it , in holland more than 60 % voted against it , holland did very well always in taking care of its own business , now a lot of low and middle class is reallly suffering .
If more than 60 % procent voted against it and they sweep it aside , you might logically conclude you live in a dictatorial non democratic society.
Its just germany and france taking power and our money flowing away , where do you reckon most of this " Greece aid " money will go ,....straight in the pockets of german and france banks as interest payments
Europe never learns from the past , it has always been a powerstruggle

I agree, Andromeda, at least based on what little I know about it. I understand the philosophy behind the EU -- a single economy, a single currency, a better ability to compete in global markets. But you can't expect to impose economic "union" on an otherwise diverse, separated set of individual states/cultures and have it work out as planned. Obviously.

If it's any comfort, 1) the lower and middle classes here are suffering as well. I think that has more to do with the economic hangover from the banking crisis of 2008 than the EU. 2) I seriously doubt the French and German banks will ever see much of their interest income. I doubt most of the nations in need of bail out will even be able to pay back the principal. So do the French and the Germans, or they would not be so hesitant.
