Magicos at Munich Hi-end Show 2019

A lot of u guys get way to hung up on room size. It always seems like the expensive speakers can't work in normal sized rooms.

Room speaker coupling is very important imho; finding the right speaker size/type for your particular room. And since most of us have to situate our speakers in less than ideal situations (eg: living/dining rooms), it makes sense to consider how the speaker will couple to the room. In a dedicated, treated room, you can accomodate a wider range of speakers by playing around with room treatments, as well as speaker and seat positioning. There's less you can do in a living/dining room like mine. I found my S5 Mk2's coupled perfectly to my medium-large room & could be placed relatively close to the front wall (ie: within approx 1 mtr). Since I don't have the luxury of adding substantive room treatments, the S7's or M6's would have overloaded my room. And I wouldn't have gotten decent stage depth. That said, I think the M6's deserve a dedicated, treated room of optimal size in any case.

TLi, obviously you preferred the M6/Soulution room of all the Magico speakers at the show. Though purely as loudspeakers, how close does the M2 get to the M6 in your opinion? Cost no object, which would you rather take home?

I use M6 for more than a year and is familiar with the sonic presentation of it. Without direct side by side comparison, it is difficult to know for sure the difference between M6 and M2. My initial impression after listening to it in two rooms is M2 has similar signature as M6. M2 maybe easier to drive due smaller and fewer woofers.

To bring the best out of M6, it requires massive amp. Once it matches with good amp like a Soulution, it beats M2 by a big margin. Eventually, it is the room size that determines which speaker to use.

For a really large room, say over 1000 sq ft, wait for the coming M8 or M9. For less 300 sq ft, M2 will be better. Anything else, M6 is the best.

According to a friend of mine who staunchly dislikes Magicos, e.g. Q7 and the even older ones, the Total DAC room with Magicos at Munich sounded quite good.

Therefore <1,500 ft3 I'd recommend the M2 or S3 Mk2, Medium Room 1,500 ft3 - 3,000 ft3 I'd recommend the M3 or S5Mk2, large Room 3,000 ft3 - 5,000 ft3 I'd go with either the M6 or S7. Correct me if i've got my figures wrong.

I only calculate the floor area, 1000 sq ft is about 33x33 feet for a squarish room.

Of course, it is better to consider the height of the ceiling. The point I am trying to make is there is a bigger “M” in the pipeline. For those who has a really large room should stay put and wait for it.

Ok i'm with you now. Yes an M series speaker to compete with flagship models from Von Schweikert, Rockport, Marten, Wilson etc is overdue. That said, the M6 is good enough for most audiophiles with a large room. I'd also like to see an M series version of the S5 Mk2 in future (M5?) which would be perfect for medium size rooms.

Thank you for sharing this link. I have heard similar comments about the M2 from others. I particularly like this paragraph in Sircom's blog which kind of summarizes most of my impressions with the Magico speakers I have heard:

"Regardless of preference between the two rooms, this works extremely well for Magico. The myth of the ‘Magico sound’ is put to bed between those two rooms, as the M2’s footprint on the performance is more shaped by the electronics than it is by itself. If you want a neutral transducer, there is no better way of showing it than having two rooms almost side-by-side with the same loudspeakers in the same position and sounding very different. The differences were marked and substantial, meaning the speakers just got out of the way. 'Character' might be important in a man or a painting, but the Magico M2 played twice in Munich suggests we don’t necessarily want it leaking into our loudspeakers!"
