Million Dollar Stereos

One would think that for that much money they would feature more gorgeous speakers that still perform. Speakers with more WAF or more "architectural design" imperative...like Vivid, Lawrence Audio, some Vapors, Vienna Acoustics, Franco Serblin, Rowen, some Magicos, Proclaim, LumenWhite, Tidal, Lansche, Voxativ, and Accapella.

Look at the x over points taken from the ntt site at that time ??

Also from the specs quite different , ,very high efficiency model , the choice of the
tweeter limits to a great deal the overal efficiency of the speaker , on a 98 db a fostex would qualify , but they use also focal , a td 5 which has a eff of 94,5 db iirc, that might also be the reason the xlf(sodft dome ) is 94 db instead of the 95 db X 2

Look forward what you think of my design , got the first 3 D computer graphic iso metric models in from the MTM today

My mistake : they both use focal bass speakers (audiom series?) but the ntt uses 2 15 inchers and at one time they also used fostex in their topmodel

3 - Way Bi-wire or
4 - Way Bi-amp
Drivers: 2 -15" Focal W.2 Rear-ported
2 - 6" .5 Sealed Focal 6WM
1 - Inverted Dome Sealed Focal TD-5
Freq Response: +/- 3db 16Hz - 45kHz Sensitivity: 2.83/1m at 98db
Imp: 8 Ohm rolls down to 4 Ohm
Crossover: 16Hz / 250Hz / 45kHz
Power Needs: 15W - 1000W
Dimensions: 70" H x 18.5" W x 31.5" D
Weight: 1245 lbs each
Shipping weight with 4 boxes: 2700 lbs

That looks indeed wrong to me as well , the 15 inch woofer minus 3 db point is 15,2 hz , therefore it would be something like -3,5 db at 14 hz which is the roll off of that woofer and not the x overpoint .
The 240 hz would be a natural x point for the woofers to give over to the mids , there seems to be missing the x over point to the tweeter .
14 hz and 92 khz are the limits for the output of the system not the x overpoints

The NTT Audiolabs sure do look like a rip off of Wilson Alexandria's. They look way too similar.

Not the first time someone has ripped off a Wilson look.

Space Heaters & Import Taxes

No one on the forum seems to understand these systems. These systems are being sold out of Florida. Florida in the last decades has been flooded with Extremely Wealthy South & Central Americans buying massive condos & estates. These properties are popped out for these people, and their heating systems are usually inadequate for a heavy Cold Snap. The Systems are actually used as SPACE HEATERS.

Admittedly many are probably loaded on "special boats" & quietly transferred to the other countries without paying import taxes.

zz.

Wonderful fun thread.
As far as which one I'd pick... the woman on the couch, which system does she come with?

Regarding the IRS and the Genesis 1.2. They are both three way systems where the bass, midrange and treble are independently adjustable. The current Genesis 1.2, I believe is available as bi-ampable OR tri-ampable. You just need to let them know how you want it configured when you order it.

Myles, the IRS as you heard it may have had the treble up because mine sound anything but bright the way it is set up, especially since it is tri-amped with a three-way active crossover, eliminating passive crossover capacitor concerns.

I'd like to see Gary Koh chime in here.

With system #4, you will have to add another $20,000 as the woofer towers seem to be levitating. Looks like they photo-shopped the base away for whatever reason ;)

That's the only system with a loudspeaker I've heard of..... and I wouldn't sell it to a dealer who would dump my crossover.

The only million dollar system I have ever heard was Winston Ma's extraordinary room in his home near Seattle. I believe he spent over a mill on the room itself, which is a masterpiece of architectural design, dimension, isolation and acoustical treatment. I'm sure the equipment inside, though expensive, was not nearly as expensive as the room. When he changes equipment (I heard it in May) he will still have the room.

I don't believe I would be wild about any of them, as crazy as that sounds.

If you gave me one, I'd take number four. I would sell the turntable, though. :D

I'd take number five, donate the whole set to charity and take the tax credit. May be I'd keep the $150,000 blu ray player to watch a rerun of the Sopranos.

Actually I'd love to hear the new Goldmund ;) The old Reference, when the arm worked, did some pretty special things in its day.

I have a customer who has the old one, so I know about that one. It would be neat to see how the new one compares, though. If someone gives me system #4, I'll be sure that you hear the turntable before I tear it into a million pieces to find out how it ticks. ;)

Deal!

Ya think? :p
