Modern architecture in Austin

Wow! That is spectacular. One wonders what it would cost to design and build a house like that today.

I am not familiar with the work of architect Roy L. Thomas.

This work seems to be heavily influenced by Adolf Loos and Walter Gropius, Mies van der Rohe, Le Corbusier and the Bauhaus movement in general.

Great site the building sits on, what a view.

The description refers to Lost Horizon, but in my research I learned that it was actually inspired by the film Things to Come, which is a thirties sci-fi film that is quite famous (with a score by Bliss that is on HP's list). Yes, agreed, the house is very much in the modernist style of the thirties. There is a wonderful house in Pittsburgh that Gropius did, with Marcel Breuer furniture and textiles, all of which remains original- the house is still in the same family. I'll try and post some links to some mid-century modern in Austin, which Rob (Puro) asked for. I may have to go out and take some pictures myself. :)

you're such a mensch :) mid-century is "in" right now theres quite a few architects and furniture companies out here specializing in it. i love the look as well as the FLW post-modern knock offs, im interested for remodeling ideas.

long gone, that house sold shortly after we looked at it 14 months or so ago. this market is extremely hot for sellers.
