MPD-8 Playback Designs - What did you own before and what did you compare with?

Dear Marcus,
How would you compare the MSB ReferenceDac with Digital Director with MPD-8 Playback Designs Digital Analog Converter?

Dear Marcus,

I've never had these three MSB units available here side by side being able to compare, but we're looking at 3x the price for the MSB Reference + Digital Director compared to the MPD-8.

If you're open to aim higher and to spend more, I would strongly suggest the WADAX Studio series.

The MSB Reference is no longer in production and only available in the second hand market. The most recent price for the three box MSB Reference, Digital Director, and power supply is about US$30,000 which includes a built in pre amp. The Playback Designs MPD8/AI (pre amp version) is US$29,000. Pretty comparable on price although one is new and one used.

That’s a different scenario - used and discounted vs. new at retail pricing. The Digial Director though is still current.

The MSB prices in Europe are higher and the second hand value of MSB as well.

Playback Designs stands strong on the used market due to high demand and very few units being available while also offering very high performance at reasonable pricing.

None of this really answers the question asked by @bernardang though unfortunately :)
